Ralph Sanchez opened his new quad-oval in November 1995 in the wake of Hurricane Andrew, which had devastated the Miami area. Originally named Metro Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex, the ultra-modern speedway’s grounds included 680 palm trees, and offered superb facilities for drivers, teams, and nearly 72,000 spectators. When the Champ Car World Series failed to draw the anticipated attendance, Homestead switched to the rival Indy Racing League in 2001. The track was sold to International Speedway Corporation and remodelled as a conventional 1.5-mile superspeedway in 1998, with banking increased to 20 degrees in 2003. It has hosted a NASCAR race since 1999 which was the title deciding final race of the year from 2012-19. The FIA GT Championship raced on the 2.21-mile road course in 1998 and 1999.
