Formula Renault, training ground for France’s racing drivers, is to have a 10-round series in Britain. Run by the BARC and Two Four Sports/Donington Park, the series will offer inexpensive single-seater racing with slick tyres and aerofoils, and the chance of an F3000 test-drive for the winner as well as generous prize money.

This is the first time the formula has come to Britain, and this coincides with the switch from the 1647cc turbo engines used for the last seven years to a 1721cc unblown R21 unit of 135 bhp developed by Renault Alpine in Dieppe. Sealed engine and gearbox assemblies costing £3900 will be available only from Radboume Racing of Wimbledon, and the regulations stipulate a maximum chassis cost of £12,000 plus VAT.

Eight firms have announced intentions to build cars for the formula, which will visit Donington Park, Mallory Park and Thruxton.
