Silverstone International Trophy

Ronnie Peterson led the International Trophy from the start after James Hunt Hesketh got away slowly from pole position, its driver thinking that the clutch was about to fail. The new Lotus was slowed by tyre trouble, but Hunt caught up easily and passed into the lead with twelve laps of the forty-lap event left. Peterson stopped with engine failure two laps later and Hunt finished a popular winner, with Jochen Mass (19) second in his Surtees TS16. Below left, the new Token made its Formula One debut in the hands of Tom Pryce, but retired with gear selection trouble

Former 125-cc. World Motorcycle Champion Stuart Graham won the third round of the Castro’ Anniversary Touring Car Championship from the similar Camaro of Richard Lloyd, in pursuit here. Peter Hanson’s Broadspeed-engined Opel Dealer Team Commodore GS/E won the 2,500 to 4,500-c.c. class, Andy Rouse and Tony Dron took the two BL-backed Broadspeed Dolomite Sprints to first and second in the 1,601 to 2,500-c.c. class, and the small class went to Stan Clark’s Alfa Junior.

Tony Brise drove the race of a life-time to win the Formula Atlantic round from Steve Choularton’s March-Hart 738 (the order shown above). Brise’s March-Holbay 733 was delayed on the line with a defunct clutch yet had passed John Nicholson for the lead by the thirteenth lap. Brian Redman celebrated his new Shadow F1 contract by winning Saturday’s Rothman’s F5000 qualifier in his Sid Taylor Lola T332, beating Tasman Champion Peter Gethin, shown below left in pursuit. Neil Corner gave the Donington Collection’s newly restored BRM P25 a win in the Historic Race, a fine debut.
