Motor Sport digital edition goes live

Just over a month ago our team expanded again with the arrival of Zamir Walimohamed, who was tasked with doing a digital version of Motor Sport magazine.

He’s spent the last few weeks converting the entire September issue into the digital format that iPads use and we are extremely happy to announce that it is now available on iTunes absolutely free.

He’s already started work on the February issue (out the day the magazine goes on sale – December 30), but the September issue is our Christmas present to you all to show you what to expect.

The iPad version will be free to all our print subscribers in the future and will not only include all the same great content as the magazine, but also extra photographs and slideshows, videos to enhance features, and links to audio podcasts and the website. You will also be able buy single digital editions from iTunes.

For now, we hope you enjoy the free version and do please let us know what you think by rating it on iTunes and leaving us a comment. A big ‘well done’ to Zamir from the rest of us on the editorial team.

Lewis and Jenson on on the Brazilian Grand Prix

Step Inside the Circuit has uploaded a new video on Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. The McLaren drivers are speaking about the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend and give some interesting insight into why the track is such a highlight of the calendar.

Oh, and Lewis does say “I might have some trouble with the fans this year because I’ve had some problems with a Brazilian again. I hope the fans go easy on me…”

The two Mclaren drivers also discuss the Korean Grand Prix and how much the 2011 McLaren has been developed over the season.

What do we think? Will the Indian Grand Prix become one of the highlights on the Formula 1 calendar? Judging by the enthusiasm for the sport in the country it’s going to make a pleasant change from some of the less well-attended Grands Prix.

An evening with Le Mans winners

On Saturday October 8, Motor Sport hosted a successful readers’ evening in association with Audi UK at the stunning Audi quattro rooms in West London. Star guests included Le Mans winners Allan McNish, Tom Kristensen and Audi factory team engineers Howden ‘H’ Haynes and Leena Gade.

When Motor Sport’s editorial team watched the little-known Truth in 24 documentary, which follows Audi’s 2008 Le Mans-winning team, it was clear that this had to be shared with Motor Sport’s readers. And so following on from the success of An Evening of Senna, Motor Sport’s second readers’ event was spawned.

Four months later and five of Audi’s sports cars – the R8c, R8, R10, R15 and R18 – were all in one room along with eight-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, two-times winner Allan McNish and the brains behind the 2008 and 2011 victories, Howden ‘H’ Haynes and Leena Gade. Motor Sport readers now had their chance to mingle with the team and see the cars close at hand before sitting down to watch the film.

The documentary follows the factory Audi team as they fight through the gruelling race in the knowledge that their car is technically slower that its rival from Peugeot. In one of the most nail-biting Le Mans in recent history, the Audi team works together to overcome its rivals, and it is engineer H’s inspired tyre-change decision 23 and half hours into the race that helps the number two car to victory.

When the Q&A session began after the film, hero Haynes was the talking point of the night. Questions such as, ‘what was going through your mind as the race finished?’ and ‘how did you cope with the exhaustion while maintaining 100 per cent concentration?’ were just a couple of the topics covered. Meanwhile McNish spoke about his dramatic crash at La Sarthe this year, Gade told us how it felt to win her first race as number one engineer, and Kristensen explained his advantage over McNish when it comes to height…

At the end of the evening every attendee left with a bag of goodies. And for those of you who weren’t able to make it there is a special podcast of the evening which will be available for download shortly.

Motor Sport will be hosting more readers’ evenings in 2012, so watch this space.

Gold-level fuel saving

The London Olympics is fast approaching and with that comes partners, sponsors and various British athletes doing weird and wonderful things in order to garner interest for the 2012 games and its sponsors alike.

Heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis has been doing her bit, but before you click away it’s worth reading what she discovered at a BP Target Neutral eco-drive day.

A route for the computer-controlled test at Millbrook Proving Ground was set and an expert eco-driver (imagine sitting next to him at supper) set a target time and fuel consumption. Ennis then completed the same course in the same automatic 3-litre diesel, and not only finished the 21-minute test six minutes slower but used a lot more fuel.

At this point we thought it would amount to an extra spend of £50 over a year, but taking into account an annual mileage of 12,000 Ennis would have actually spent £1120 more on fuel.

Beijing Paralympic Games 200m bronze medallist Stef Reid also did the test with a smaller 1.8-litre petrol and could save £460 a year. “It’s not a matter of driving more slowly,” Reid admitted. “It’s being a smoother driver.”

Ennis added: “Efficient driving is about being smooth and safe and anticipating the road ahead. I’ve learned to not accelerate too hard, not to over-rev and slowing down to coast in gear with your foot off the accelerator.”

If you have any confusion about how to save fuel, just ask the next London minicab driver you meet.

Or, if you don’t live in London… click here

BBC and Sky to share F1

As I’m sure many of you have heard, this morning it was announced that coverage of Formula 1 from 2012-2018 would be shared between the BBC and Sky. The BBC will air half the races, while Sky Sports will show all the practice sessions as well as qualifying and all the races.

This is obviously sad news as the BBC coverage has been fantastic from start to finish. However, the bigger news is the cost for F1 fans. In the Concorde Agreement it says that Formula 1 must be free to view, but I wonder whether Sky can bypass that by not making the coverage pay-per-view.

But, and this is the bad news, even if the coverage is free you still need Sky – something I do not have in my prehistoric house. A quick bit of research and I have found out the following…

First, I need to buy a Sky box and get that installed. This is something I can thankfully do as I can install a dish on my roof. Many people can’t because of planning restrictions. Once I’ve done that I then need to pay for the monthly sports package and that will cost, at the very least, £480 a year.

Of course, more news will emerge soon on how this will all work, so I am not writing off the money yet. However, this is a very big step for a sport that relies entirely on sponsorship and therefore viewing figures around the globe.

We all know how much it costs to cover Grand Prix racing and we understand that the BBC needs to cut costs. The other day, though, I read a piece in one of the broadsheets that said, ‘the BBC sent over 50 people to cover the Olympic Games ceremony while Sky managed to get away with only 11’. Something doesn’t quite add up here.

What are your thoughts? Will you still be watching Formula 1 on Sky?

Bill Boddy MBE 1913-2011

A memorial service for Bill Boddy was held on Friday July 15 at St Andrews Church, Presteigne. The service took place at 2pm, afterwhich the congregation gathered at the Radnorshire Arms at 3pm to enjoy sandwiches and chocolate cake (WB’s favourites). The family have requested no flowers, preferring the alternative of donations to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Motor Sport is deeply saddened to announce the death at the age 98 of Bill Boddy, the mainstay of the magazine throughout most of its existence. Universally known as WB, Boddy was officially the Editor of Motor Sport for an astonishing 55 years, from 1936 to 1991, during which time he made the title an opinionated and highly influential voice in the worlds of racing and motoring. Remarkably, he continued to write for the magazine every single month since, dictating his last column only days before his death.

But his significance extended much further than one publication. He was also arguably the single most important figure in the vintage and classic car movement, using Motor Sport to promote interest in old cars at a time when few were interested. He became a human encyclopaedia on Brooklands, the world’s first race circuit, and apart from writing the definitive history he founded the Brooklands Society which saved the derelict track. A stalwart of vintage and veteran racing – he went on 39 Brighton Runs – he also supported low-cost racing during the 1950s by helping to found the 750MC and promoting the 500cc racing movement which later led to Britain’s domination of the racing scene.

WB’s frank and fearless road tests became the industry benchmark, and by recruiting ‘Jenks’ (the forthright Denis Jenkinson) to the magazine as Grand Prix correspondent he created a pairing which genuinely was, as our masthead proclaimed, “the authoritative voice of the sport”. Boddy used this power to campaign actively on many topics, notably against the introduction of the 70mph speed limit. With a string of books on cars and racing, WB’s deep knowledge was well known and he made countless appearances on radio and TV. In 1997 he received an MBE for services to journalism.

There has probably never been such a long working career in any field: Boddy’s first article was in Motor Sport in 1930, an amazing 81 years ago. WB saw both Nuvolari and Vettel race, knew Caracciola, Hawthorn and Clark, and tested Austin Sevens when they were brand-new. He turned Motor Sport from a tiny specialist title into a major player with great influence in the motoring world, and its continued existence is his legacy.

A full appreciation will appear in the September issue. Following a private cremation, there will be a memorial service for all those who wish to pay their respects. Details at the top.

Having decided to honour members of the sport by inducting them into a Hall of Fame, Motor Sport hosted an evening to do just that in February 2010, with four inductees announced alongside eight founder members. The occasion was a huge success and was lauded as “an indispensable part of the winter season” by inductee Tony Brooks. Twelve months later and we were back at the Roundhouse in Camden on February 15 to induct four more racing icons.

We were honoured to be joined by the movie’s producer Manish Pandey and former McLaren team coordinator Jo Ramirez, the man who somehow managed to remain friends with both Senna and Alain Prost during their incendiary two years as team-mates in 1988-89.

This is the full, unedited, recording of the open discussion after the film which included Jo, Manish, our editor-in-chief Nigel Roebuck and features editor Rob Widdows. We apologise for the sound – it was recorded live!

Dinner with Dallara at Williams

On Thursday April 7 the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) is hosting an evening with designer and engineer Gianpaolo Dallara at the Williams F1 Conference Centre.

It promises to be an interesting night with Chris Aylett, CEO of the MIA, sitting down to interview Gianpaolo about his career, his company and the work that it is currently undertaking. During dinner the founder of the largest race car company in the world will then take questions from the floor.

The idea of the evening is to help people ‘business network’. However, if that doesn’t sound like your type of thing, Williams is also offering attendees a tour of the Williams F1 Grand Prix Collection – the largest private collection of F1 cars in the world.

Motor Sport will be there to listen to what Gianpaolo has to say, as Dallara has plenty of exciting projects on the go. If you’re interested in attending then please contact Jayne Thomas at the MIA on 02476 692600 or jayne.thomas@the-mia.com, or visit www.the-mia.com. Tickets cost £105 + VAT if you’re an MIA member, £135 + VAT if you’re a non-member and £75 + VAT if you’re a student. It’s well worth going if you’re at all interested in car design or the business behind the sport that we all love.

Hall of Fame honours racing icons

Motor Sport Magazine paid tribute to four inspirational racing icons last night at the Roundhouse, London, by inducting them into the prestigious annual Motor Sport Hall of Fame, held in association with TAG Heuer.

Sir Jack Brabham OBE, Sir Frank Williams CBE, Jody Scheckter and Dario Franchitti were all honoured with awards on stage in front of a star-studded audience. Collecting the award on behalf of Sir Jack was his son David Brabham, with the legendary Sir Stirling Moss OBE making the presentation.

Having won three Formula 1 titles in 1959-60 and 1966, Jack Brabham is the oldest surviving World Champion. In 1966 became the only man to ever win the F1 drivers’ title in one of his own cars, having founded the highly successful Brabham racing team.

Frank Williams received his award from legendary F1 commentator Murray Walker, who spoke fondly about the endless passion and commitment to Grand Prix racing that the Wiliams team founder has shown since the late ’60s.

The third inductee of the evening was Ferrari’s 1979 World Champion Jody Scheckter. TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Christophe Babin and five-time Grand Prix winner John Watson bestowed the honour on the South African racer. Scheckter had a sensational career, driving for McLaren, Tyrrell, Wolf and Ferrari. He was the last driver to win a world title for Ferrari until Michael Schumacher did so 21 years later.

Completing the line-up of 2011 Motor Sport Hall of Fame inductees was three-time IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti. Highly respected for his achievements in America, the Scot is also a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and undoubtedly Britain’s most successful motor racing export to the US.

The great and good of F1 gathered for the awards, with personalities including Christian Horner, Eddie Jordan, John Watson and Karun Chandhok in attendance on the night. Celebrity faces were also seen gracing the red carpet outside the iconic Roundhouse and mixing with the motor sport fraternity. James Martin, Chris Rea, Nick Mason and Johnnie Walker all joined the exclusive event.

Commenting on his accolade, Sir Frank Williams said: “Number one I must remind myself not to let my ego get the better of me, because this is an amazing magic. It is an honour, something I will try not to brag about.”

In 2010 Mario Andretti, Tony Brooks, Jacky Ickx and Ron Dennis were inducted at the inaugural Motor Sport Hall of Fame event, along with founding members Enzo Ferrari, Tazio Nuvolari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Sir Jackie Stewart, Sir Stirling Moss, Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.

November’s audio podcast with Pat Symonds

Despite freezing cold weather and a tube strike, Pat Symonds made it to our Chelsea offices and spent a very interesting hour with us. Thankfully Pat is one of the few engineers in Formula 1 that can explain the staggering amount of technology in Formula 1 in layman’s terms and what he has to say about KERS, the new rules and Red Bull this year was fascinating. Not to mention what he had to say about Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna and Jean Alesi.

We hope you enjoy it. As always, do leave a comment – we’re always interested to know what everyone thinks. Good or bad!

Pat worked in Formula 1 for nearly 30 years and putting the fact that he was Michael Schumacher’s race engineer at Benetton aside, he has plenty of stories to tell about the past and present.

Driving a Porsche 908/3 up the hill at Goodwood

At the Festival of Speed this year our ‘senior contributing writer’ Andrew Frankel took a Porsche 908/3 up the hill at Goodwood. This was no ordinary Porsche 908/3 (is there such a thing?!) either…

Andrew makes it clear in the video just what a pleasure it was to drive, but something we should mention is that the noise of the car is just, quite simply, awesome.

Motor Sport Magazine at the Festival of Speed

The Festival of Speed seems to come round quicker every year. Whether this is because we’re getting older or that it is one of the undisputed ‘meetings of the year’ we’re not sure. I’m hoping it’s the latter…

Motor Sport Magazine is back this year and although we won’t have our usual stand next to the cricket pitch we will have a presence on the BMW stand (see map below).

Do come and say hello over the weekend as we’ll be equipped with tea, coffee and of course, the latest subscription offers. Also you may end up bumping in to the likes of Tiff Needell, Jake Humphrey, Murray Walker and Steve Soper who are all going to be visiting the BMW stand over the weekend.

See you there!

The Patrick Head podcast

Due to a late change of plans, the Patrick Head podcast will be recorded on Friday May 21 rather than today. We’re very sorry for the delay, but we’re pretty sure this one will be worth waiting a couple of days for.

The good news is that this means there’s still time to ask him a question by clicking here.
