May’s audio podcast with Patrick Head

Ladies and gentlemen, the Patrick Head podcast is here! It’s taken a while and a couple of date reshuffles, but it was well worth the wait. Thank you all very much for sending in your questions – we managed to cover quite a few. However, we didn’t manage to ask as many as we would have liked as some of Patrick’s stories were too good to interupt. Have a listen and I think you’ll agree…

Patrick Head is even FUNNIER that I’d thought!

The Alan-Jones-gets-a-good-hiding-before-Monza story is absolutely hilarious!!!

Really interesting insight into Reutemann’s psyche and, particualarly, his approach during the Monaco 1980 meeting.

Also, I enjoyed listening to Patrick’s views on Cristian Horner’s contribution to RBR vis-a-vis Adrian Newey.

Lastly, best wishes to Patrick and the Team on their on-going motor racing adventures and, especially, for their own brand of KERS in both F1 and for the World generally going forward!

    Great podcast!

Yes! Lets start the bring back Nigel campaign! :D

  3. Mario Carneiro Neto, 22 May 2010 01:17

Listened to the podcast earlier today but didin’t get a chance to comment until now…

This was great, Patrick Head is a great storyteller. Lovely to hear about Alan Jones and Carlos Reutemann… i just wish he talked a little about Ayrton…

  4. carl, 22 May 2010 12:17

The best yet! But the “questions from readers” content was a bit thin … I didn’t hear a single one .. :(

Anyway, get Mr Head back sometime soon ….

  5. Chris Hall, 22 May 2010 22:52

I reckon Jonesy’s mate was probably Bruce Allison. Nice hearing Patrick flesh out the bones of what happened in the Chiswick High Road :o)

This was an excellent episode; so much so that I listened to it twice.

I had no idea that Patrick was such a talker!

  7. Garry, 23 May 2010 18:30

    Noy my favourite Podcast.

Patrick illustarted once again that those who work in F1 has no interest in looking back on the past stories and achievements in F1.

It is the only sport i can think of that disregards its history so blatanly. Diametrically opposed to what the fans want i would think. Certainly the fans of Motorsport Magazine.

There were some gems though, thanks.

I suppose this realisation completely torpedo’s the idea of Berrnie talking about his time as Brabham boss.

  8. Andy Muggeridge, 24 May 2010 18:17

Very good but an hour’s not long enough for all the history and stories Williams has. Good to hear about Jones and Reuteman but what about Mansell and Piquet, Rosberg, Prost, Hill, Senna, Villeneuve, JPM, Nico to name but a few ?
Get him back for another hour or two ! Does he miss biking done to Mangy Course like he used to ?

  9. john read, 24 May 2010 21:23

If he comes back for another one, Motorsport may have to put him on helium or very strong coffee at least. So many stories, so little time.

    ‘Garry’

    - you can’t be a historian and an innovator at the same time.

Why isn’t it ‘Sir’ Patrick head?
That would be a better campaign than bring back the
    Brummie Whinger …

What an interesting interview. If Patrick did more of these he would lose his dour image.

  12. Rob A, 26 May 2010 09:57

Brilliant stuff as ever. Patrick showed a much more cheerful side to himself which was a pleasure to hear. A “proper bloke”!

Hello everybody. Just back from the Liverpool Pageant of Power, an interesting experiment designed to promote the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power which happens in July. All these pageants!
My blog about the event will be here soon…
I really should apologise for not asking very many of your questions on the podcast with Patrick Head. A great many of you took the time and trouble to send in some excellent questions but………………we simply thought that Patrick was in such fine form that we did not feel it was right to slow him down while we went through your points. So what we plan to do is answer as many of your questions as possible in the next podcast when we will not be having a guest.
I am hoping to secure a guest for the one after that as soon as I can get time for all the calls!
Anyway guys, I’m pleased to see that you all enjoyed the show with Patrick – he was in great form. One of the most intelligent and entertaining people in the pit lane. By some way, actually.
Having guided my little Renault Modus all the way from Liverpool to the Sussex coast I am now ready for a brief rest before tackling the Editor’s next challenge! Back soon.

Excellent. I’ve always been an admirer of Williams F1 and of course Patrick Head. I doubt this could have gone on “too long.” Feel free to invite him back. There are many topics I could listen to him expound upon, both current & historic.

  15. Tim Burton, 27 May 2010 22:49

Another great podcast. I think Patrick Head’s contribution made it the best so far. Hpoefully he will be able to come back again soon. Thanks to all concerned.

  16. Andrew Livesey, 28 May 2010 19:37

    Rob,

I have yet to listen to this latest edition of the podcast but before I do, I have one nagging question for you.

In an earlier podcast thread you mentioned that the podcast was in i-tunes and we could subscribe to it there. Well, I have looked and cannot for the life of me, find it anywhere; I have looked in the hobbies section and sports section, all to no avail.

Could you please confirm that what you had said is indeed correct and if so, give us a clue how to find it?

It would go a long way to preventing me from pulling my hair out!

Can’t wait to get home and download this episode!

    Keep up the good work!

    All the best…

  17. John Williams, 30 May 2010 21:15

Patrick is one of the nicest people in F1. A brilliant engineeer and yet very friendly and approchable. It would be great if he could come back for another interview and share more of his experiences in F1.

  18. Alex Birnie, 1 June 2010 19:40

This is the first podcast that I’ve listen to. Now,I am an “addict”! I’m an “old man” ,and enjoy reading/listening the “mature” people now/was in F1. There are a lot of non-drivers that would like to hear i.e. Bob Dance,Borsari,Clive Hicks,Kenny Szymanski etc. They all have good & funny stories! You should do not leave them out.

  19. IgnacioRodriguez-Genta, 2 June 2010 21:39

Absolutely Brilliant.Patrick Head, one of my favourite persons in F1.

  20. Ignacio Rodriguez-Genta, 2 June 2010 22:20

I will never forget in Argentina 1978 when, late in the afternoon, I asked him to show me the lovely FW 06,and he opened the iron curtains of the old pits in Buenos Aires for me to see the car!!
Is one of my fondest memories.
    TXS PATRICK!

  21. Steven Roy, 3 June 2010 23:24

I am a bit late getting to this but Patrick Head is always good value.

One of the great things about podcasts is that we can hear how these people interact rather than simply reading someone’s description of it. Patrick has always had this gruff reputation and it is interesting to hear how natural and comfortable he is with this group.

  22. Simon O'Donovan, 13 December 2010 00:55

It is impossible not to have people such as this gentleman involved on one of your shows.

At least he is honest & rather to the point with any opinion.

Compare the man with Mario Andretti for with his sense of humour & his knowledge, there are times when you may think he used to be a driver himelf.

Nice to hear such a lengthy summary & it doesn’t matter that I have listened to this rather late.
