Motor Sport’s digital edition: FAQ

Read every issue on your iPad or Android tablet device! Motor Sport is now fully interactive, with each issue featuring extra photographs and slideshows, videos to enhance features, links to audio podcasts and the website, new issue available one day earlier than print, Formula 1 reports after every Grand Prix.

> How do I download the Motor Sport app?

Go into your Apple or Android App Store and search for ‘Motor Sport magazine’. In the results, click ‘FREE’ next to the Motor Sport app. Once it is downloaded it will appear in Newsstand or Apps folder. Click on the cover to enter the app.

> How do I buy a Digital only subscription?

You can buy a digital subscription directly from Motor Sport magazine by clicking here.

> Do print subscribers get the Digital edition for free?

As a print subscriber you do not receive the digital magazine as part of your subscription. If you wish to add the digital magazine to be included in your print magazine you will need to upgrade your subscription to the Bundle package. You can upgrade to the Bundle package from as little as £2.99 and receive instant access to both the interactive digital edition and online Motor Sport archive. For more information click here.

> How do I create a Motor Sport account?

You can create one by clicking here. In case you already have an email address associated with your online account and don’t know your password, you can reset your password by clicking here. Your new password will then be sent to your email address. You can use this to login and update in the members area to something more memorable by clicking here.

> I’m a Bundle subscriber, how can I access the Digital editions for free?

If you are currently set up as a member on the website use your email and your password to login into the app as a print subscriber. If you are not a member on our website, please click here. Then set your account up by logging in through Subscriber Login. You can find your Customer ID number on the front of the packaging your magazine comes in, on your subscription confirmation letter, or any renewal letters you have received. Once logged in please update your details to include an email address and a password for your account. Once you have set up your account with an email and password you will be able to access the digital issues after 24 hours.

> I have reset my password and still can’t access the app

Once you reset your password it can take up to 24 hours to access the digital issues as our website needs to sync with the App and update your password.

> I am having difficulties downloading the magazine

To download and view issues click the download tab under each issue cover. Please ensure that you are connected to a wi-fi network to ensure that the issues download correctly.

> Can I view the App on my smartphone?

Currently the App is unavailable on smartphones

> Does the Motor Sport app work on all tablets?

Currently the App does not work on Nook, Amazon, ASUS Transformer or Blackberry tablets. The Motor Sport app is compatible with iPad 2 or later device models – if you are a current Digital or Bundle subscriber with an iPad 1 please contact for more information on how to get the App on your device.

> I don’t have an iPad or Android tablet can I still get a digital version of the magazine?

The Motor Sport interactive digital magazine is currently only available on iPad and Android tablets. However our partners PocketMags do offer a PDF version of the magazine that is available to be read on your PC, Mac, Windows 8 device or Blackberry Playbook. PocketMags offer both single issues or subscriptions for purchase.

> Content is missing

This is because the magazine was not fully downloaded. Please archive the issue and re-download.

> How can I free up space on my iPad or Android tablet?

You can Archive any issue you have paid for and re-download it again at any time as long as you are signed in.

> How do I use the scrapbook?

When viewing an issue tap the bottom of the screen and then tap the bookmark icon far left. Press the plus button then the scrapbook button. This will now be added to your scrapbook on the home page.

> How do I buy a single digital issue?

You can buy individual issues directly through the App by clicking the Buy button next to the particular issue you require.

> I have purchased a subscription direct from Apple and are unsure how many issues I have remaining

We don’t actually have the ability to see what your subscription status is with Apple, as you have bought the magazine from them directly. Apple doesn’t share any purchaser’s information with us. However, you can check your subscription status with them by following the below steps:

  • Go to the Settings tab on your iPad.
  • Click on the iTunes and App Store button on the left hand side.
  • Click on your Apple ID.
  • Then click on the Subscriptions button.
  • It will then show the subs you have through Apple
  • Then click on the Motor Sport subscription and it will then show you your sub status with Apple and how many issues you have left or if it is expired.

> I have purchased a subscription or issue direct from Apple and have lost it from my iPad, how do I get it back?

If at any time you have lost any issues that have been downloaded, please use the “Restore in App Purchases” function to re-download these issues.

> How do I cancel a free trial or turn off an auto-renewing subscription on my iPad?

1. From your device’s Home screen, tap App Store.
2. Tap Featured at the bottom of the screen.
3. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
4. Tap the Apple ID button in the lower-left corner. (If you are not signed in, tap the Sign In button, and sign in with your Apple ID. Then, scroll back to the bottom of the page, and tap the Apple ID button.)
5. Tap the View Apple ID button.
6. Enter your password and tap OK.
7. From the main account page, scroll down and tap Manage App Subscriptions. If you don’t have app subscriptions this button will not be displayed.
8. You’ll then be taken to your App Subscriptions page.

To turn off auto-renewal:
1. From your Manage App Subscription page, choose the Motor Sport app subscription.
2. Tap the subscription category for which you want to disable auto-renewal.
3. Tap the ‘On’ toggle switch to ‘Off’.
4. You’ll receive a confirmation message; tap ‘Turn Off’ to confirm your choice.

    Very much enjoy you publication. I subscribe to many yours is the best.
    I have an ipad mini and find it hard to read portions of the Grand Prix review that you publish after each race (excellent also) the segment that is difficult to read is the driver by driver recap at the rear of the item – how may I make the font larger the “pinch” technique that works in all the other articles doesn’t seem to work on this page. I’d like to read the information but on the smaller screen of the “mini” this is impossible. Any suggestions?

    I bought a single digital issue of the June 13 edition. Download has been completed and I see 2 options below the icon: “Archive” and “Download”. I can’t work out how to view the edition. I taped the icon and nothing happens, I tapped “Archive” and the Archive option disappeared + it seemed that I needed to download the edition again. It must be simple but I can’t see the contents. Help appreciated. I’m not a subscriber and have no account. Thanks, Bert

    Hi Bert, once you have downloaded the issue you will get the option to click ‘View’. If you are still seeing the download button please click it again – this is likely showing as the issue has not completed downloaded yet, this may be due to the Wi-Fi connection dropping out or has been interrupted during download. The archive option removes the issue from your iPad allowing you to free up space and download the issue again at a later date.

    had no problem downloading the july edition onto my tablet but when I log in to download the new august edition it simply doesnt appear on the screen. just the july edition and earlier.

    Hi Stanley,

    To check how many issues you have remaining on your Motor Sport subscription with Apple direct do the following:
    Go to the Settings tab on your iPad.
    Click on the iTunes and App Store button on the left hand side.
    Click on your Apple ID.
    Then click on the Subscriptions button.
    It will then show the subs you have through Apple
    Then click on the Motor Sport subscription and it will then show you your sub status with Apple and how many issues you have left or if it is expired.

    Hi, I’ve been buying many of your digital mags and I love them. You guys are the best mag for formula 1 I’ve ever found . I also subscribe to autosport. . My question is why can’t I view any of your mags in landscape mode? I’m running the newest iPad . I also have purchased all of my mags from via my apple account . I would very much like to know why I can’t do so .even autosport allows landscape mode . I wonder if its because I m buying my mags from apple instead of directly from your web site? I kind of doubt it though. If I can’t get it now is it in your plans to be able to allow your customers to get landscape mode ?     I just read through the last two issues on my Android device. This is remarkably better than the print versions, enhanced in every way. I can finally get the latest issue at the same time as the UK, and the video links are oustanding. This is the best digital magazine adaptation I’ve yet seen.

    I received a letter today in my print subscription saying that this was being taken away. I am sure this is in breach of the original deal I subscribed to.

    Hi Matt, the interactive digital magazine had been offered as a free benefit to print subscribers who receive a physical copy of the magazine should they wish to view it. The digital magazine was not sold as part of a print subscription product.

    Our interactive digital magazine has continued to have a lot of investment in it with extra video & content not seen in the print magazine and been extended with the Grand Prix reports and month in Motor Sport digital products, so is now a standalone paid for subscription product. We are excited to say it has been nominated for a couple of digital magazine awards this year as well.

    We believe subscribers will really enjoy the new bundle package and see it as great value for money as both products provide very different user experience. The bundle package will also allow readers to continued access to the soon to be launched Online Archive, featuring our whole back catalog of 90 years of Motor Sport, once it becomes a paid for service.

    Current subscribers who are mid-way or at any point through their print or digital subscription will be able to upgrade to the bundle package and get access to these three products from the coming January issue. However, as mentioned in the letter, you will be able to continue to have access to the digital magazine as print subscriber until the March issue.

    It sounds like you have bought the January issue twice from Apple. I suggest you email Apple direct from the confirmation email they sent you advising you of your purchase, and advise you have been charged twice for the same product, that being the January 2014 issue twice and ask for a refund.

    The android version is a really poor app, and to date Motor Sport don’t seem to care at all. I have downloaded and reloaded the app several times this week to my Asus Transformer tablet, and it crashes every time (all other apps i have work fine btw). I have emailed Motor Sport 4 days ago to try and resolve the problem, and have yet to receive a response from them.

    Very poor effort all around. Don’t touch this app at all.

    In regards to your issues with the ASUS Transformer TF300T tablet, our container app company has been working on a solution, but unable to develop one to date that resolves the issues completely with this particular device. I do apologise that we don’t have a solution at the moment for this particular device. I have emailed you in regards to how we have refunded your subscription.
    As an alternative method to receive the magazine digitally our partners PocketMags offer a pdf version of Motor Sport magazine that may be of interest to you and works across multiple devices, including PC’s.

    A week ago now I bought and paid online for a bundle (online and print) and selected to start from the July edition. The July edition is now on available to download, but not for free, it still wants me to pay for it.
    Am I missing something here, apart from the July edition that is?

    Hi John, our IT team have looked into your account and resolved the issue with why you were not able to access the July 2014 issue for free. It should appear automatically for you to download for free now. If for any reason it is still asking you to purchase, please log back into the app as this will recall the system to see which issues you can access for free.

    Thanks Robert works great now, very happy with the ipad version too :-)

    Is there an alternate home page view I can select that only shows you the copies you have already downloaded. The view I currently see that lists everything available whether downloaded or not is useful and good, but sometimes you may just want to flick through the copies you have already downloaded, a page like that would refresh quicker too.
    Just a suggestion but being able to choose a default view with the option to swap between the two views would be nice.

    6 days after paying for a bundled subscription & I still have neither a welcome email from Motorsport nor instructions on how to access. So. I logged into the play market, downloaded the app for the digital edition & find that my I still have to buy the current edition. What gives?

    I let my prior print subscription expires because you couldn’t get the magazine here in a timely manner and now it appears you are unable to ensure your paying customers can access anything.

    Have I made a mistake giving your magazine another shot? Do you have any suggestions as to how I can fix my ability to download digital editions?

    Hi Tracy, first off sorry you did not receive your confirmation email of purchase. This is sent out out after transaction made online, however may have ended up in your junk mail. In regards to why you are being asked in the App to pay for the current August issue, is because when you bought your subscription you asked for it to start with the September 2014 issue – this issue will be released towards the end of this week and you will be able to download this for free. As you are a bundle subscriber you do have access now to the online archive which you can access by going to and logging in with your same login details you sue for the App. If you have any further questions please do contact us at

    Thanks for your message. Just to check when you are finished reading your issue on your iPad you are not clicking on the ‘Archive’ button underneath the cover image? As the only way to remove an issue from a device is by clicking on this option. If this is not the case may I suggest deleting the App from your iPad and reinstalling it.     I love the digital edition and have usually devoured it before my hard copy subscription arrives – but I have trouble following the links to some of the historical articles. Some give me a ‘so sorry – address invalid’ message which is disappointing – but far worse is when the article is found (Moss/Jenks Mille Miglia is a fine example) where the text from a print copy – presumably scanned and run through an optical character recognition engine – becomes practically incomprehensible. Pull it up and try reading it – very sad!
    Could you please invest in a better OCR program or, if necessary, have some editors with knowledge of the sport read and edit the articles so they are as good as the originals.

    Hi John, glad to hear you are enjoying the Archive. You are correct in that we have scanned in previous issues to create the digital copy. We are aware that there are errors in the text recognition across a number of articles. To resolve this we currently have staff in the office working their way through each of the 1061 issues on the archive and correcting any errors in each one. We do ask, if you notice an error please do click the ‘Noticed an error on this page’ button that is on each article, as this will help us identify specific articles.

    I have just been looking at my old downloads and it advised me I could update the magazine, I have clicked on a couple but the download is not working it just gives me the option to pause but this does not do anything, I am unable to view the magazine, I have tried login out and back in and I tried shutting the app.

    Hi Chris, when you are attempting to update the magazine please ensure you are connected to a WiFi source for the complete duration of the download. If this is still failing to resolve the problem, please tab the ‘Archive’ button underneath the logo – this will remove the issue from your device allowing you to re-download the issue from the start again.

    Hi Jim,
    To delete the Motor Sport app from your iPad please follow the below steps:
    - Locate the Motor Sport app in your newsstand. Don’t open it; just find where it is located. Normally, to open an app, you have to tap the icon. Instead of doing that, press the icon and hold down for a few seconds.
    - You will notice that all the icons on the screen will start ‘wiggling’ and there will be a tiny ‘X’ mark at the top right hand corner of every icon. Press this ‘X’ mark.
    - A pop-up window will appear asking if you want to delete the app. Hit the icon which says ‘Delete’ and the app will be removed from your iPad.
    - Then press the Home button and the icons will stop wiggling. The screen will go back to normal minus the app you just deleted.
    You will be able to download the Motor Sport app again from your App store.

However we have requested the IT guys to have look into this further. Soon as I have an update I’ll come back to you.     Did your guys look at the issue with crashing on first generation iPad. Mine still will not load and as I am on a lengthy trip not being able to access my subscription is rather frustrating. The old version worked perfectly. I emailed all the crash info as requested and no reply . I have deleted and re loaded the app and still the same thing.

    Since 2011 I read a copy on my iPad (1).

    Since your last update, dates 9/3, I have been unable to open the application on my iPad 1. I have now lost all my archive and moreover, I had not finished to read the current issue.

    iPad version of Greatest Racing Cars does not display photos properly. You get the initial photo only, swiping for others takes you to the next car, not the next image. Only the text of each story displays properly.

    Hi Jim, thanks for your message, our developers have identified the problem that has seen some of our customers who are using Apples new iOS 8 having problems viewing some of the pictures contained in the Great Racing Cars bookazine. They have fixed this problem and have sent a new app version to Apple for approval (last Friday 19 Sept). The approval process usually takes between 7-14 days – we think it may be on the longer side at the moment due to large number of app updates being received by Apple for approval with the recent release of iOS 8.

    Hi Gary, thanks for your message, this particular bookazine Great Racing Cars images have been loaded to be displayed in landscape mode – so if you rotate your device to landscape you should find you have the option to swipe across and view the different images.     I have the same problem as others with my iPad 1.

    After downloading the most recent update of the app, I can no longer access the content. When I open the app in Newsstand, I get a screen with a montage of past covers for a few seconds which then goes to black. No option to open the app.

    Could I bother you to email me the solution referred to in your responses above to other iPad 1 users?

    Thank you for sorting the problem with the bookazine the Great Racing Cars. There is also a similar problem with the Grand Prix reviews on IOS.8 and I hope that has been sorted at the same time.

    I apologise for the problems you have had accessing the Motor Sport app since our recent update with your iPad 1.
    Our developers have identified the problem causing some of our customers problems on iPad 1 devices. They have fixed this problem and have sent a new app version to Apple for approval. The approval process usually takes between 7-14 days – we think it may be on the longer side at the moment due to large number of app updates being received by Apple for approval with the recent release of iOS 8. Once this updates approved and available for download/update on your device please download this.
    However in the short term I have sent you an email with instructions and links that will allow you to download our last version of the app that will work on your device in the short term until our updated app is approved.

    Hi Jim, thanks for your message. Yes it is the same problem with the Grand Prix reports as with the Great Racing Cars. This bug has been fixed in our most recent app update that we have sent to Apple for approval. We hope to have that update approved in the coming week.
