> How do I download the Motor Sport app?

Go into your Apple or Android App Store and search for ‘Motor Sport magazine’. In the results, click ‘FREE’ next to the Motor Sport app. Once it is downloaded it will appear in Newsstand or Apps folder. Click on the cover to enter the app.

> Problems with your Digital Subscription / renewal for subscriptions bought via Apple

(Updated 13/2/15) The below announcement applies to all Motor Sport digital subscription customers who have a subscription direct with Apple/iTunes. This does not apply to customers with a digital or Bundle subscription to Motor Sport purchased via Motor Sport magazine direct or Google Play.

Apple have increased App prices in response to an increase in VAT in the EU and currency exchange changes. In doing so they appear to have cancelled all auto-renewing subscriptions, affecting our Motor Sport digital subscription customers.

These auto-renewals allow users to subscribe to in-app purchases through a recurring payment that allows people to subscribe to magazines using Apple’s Newsstand. While Apple turning off the auto-renewals has prevented charging users the higher prices without their consent, neither users or publishers have been made aware of the change. Instead the subscriptions will just have been cancelled.

Here at Motor Sport we have reduced our digital subscription prices within the Apple App Store and made sure the App is back to our previous prices. In order to continue receiving Motor Sport, customers will need to turn their auto-renewals back on through settings or by re-purchasing the subscription through the app or Motor Sport magazine direct.

Checking your subscription status and reactivating your subscription is a short process. Please follow the steps below and you should be back up and running within 5 minutes.

To check your subscription status with Apple:
• Go to the Settings tab on your iPad.
• Click on the iTunes and App Store button on the left hand side.
• Click on your Apple ID.
• Then click on the Subscriptions button.
• It will then show the subs you have through Apple
• Then click on the Motor Sport subscription and it will then show you your sub status with Apple and how many issues you have left or if it is expired.

(At Motor Sport we don’t actually have the ability to see what your subscription status is with Apple, as you have bought the magazine from them directly. Apple doesn’t share any purchaser’s information with us)

If your subscription to Motor Sport has ended, to reactivate your subscription please follow one of the following steps:
- Re-activate your auto renewal in your iTunes subscription settings
- Re-subscribe to the digital magazine through the Motor Sport App
- Subscribe to Motor Sport digital magazine through Motor Sport direct by clicking here

We home you continue to enjoy Motor Sport magazine the very best in motor racing for 90 years.

I bought a single digital issue of the June 13 edition. Download has been completed and I see 2 options below the icon: “Archive” and “Download”. I can’t work out how to view the edition. I taped the icon and nothing happens, I tapped “Archive” and the Archive option disappeared + it seemed that I needed to download the edition again. It must be simple but I can’t see the contents. Help appreciated. I’m not a subscriber and have no account. Thanks, Bert

Hi Bert, once you have downloaded the issue you will get the option to click ‘View’. If you are still seeing the download button please click it again – this is likely showing as the issue has not completed downloaded yet, this may be due to the Wi-Fi connection dropping out or has been interrupted during download. The archive option removes the issue from your iPad allowing you to free up space and download the issue again at a later date.

I just read through the last two issues on my Android device. This is remarkably better than the print versions, enhanced in every way. I can finally get the latest issue at the same time as the UK, and the video links are oustanding. This is the best digital magazine adaptation I’ve yet seen.

I love the digital edition and have usually devoured it before my hard copy subscription arrives – but I have trouble following the links to some of the historical articles. Some give me a ‘so sorry – address invalid’ message which is disappointing – but far worse is when the article is found (Moss/Jenks Mille Miglia is a fine example) where the text from a print copy – presumably scanned and run through an optical character recognition engine – becomes practically incomprehensible. Pull it up and try reading it – very sad!
Could you please invest in a better OCR program or, if necessary, have some editors with knowledge of the sport read and edit the articles so they are as good as the originals.
Thanks for listening – please keep up the good work and strive for perfection!!

Hi John, glad to hear you are enjoying the Archive. You are correct in that we have scanned in previous issues to create the digital copy. We are aware that there are errors in the text recognition across a number of articles. To resolve this we currently have staff in the office working their way through each of the 1061 issues on the archive and correcting any errors in each one. We do ask, if you notice an error please do click the ‘Noticed an error on this page’ button that is on each article, as this will help us identify specific articles.

    Dear Sirs,

I have just been looking at my old downloads and it advised me I could update the magazine, I have clicked on a couple but the download is not working it just gives me the option to pause but this does not do anything, I am unable to view the magazine, I have tried login out and back in and I tried shutting the app.

    Yours sincerely

    Chris

Hi Chris, when you are attempting to update the magazine please ensure you are connected to a WiFi source for the complete duration of the download. If this is still failing to resolve the problem, please tab the ‘Archive’ button underneath the logo – this will remove the issue from your device allowing you to re-download the issue from the start again.

Will there ever be a digital version that can be read in landscape mode on an ipad as it currently only appears as portrait?

I have a digital subscription and receive the magazine regularly. I use a Nexus 7 tablet. The text is readable but very small. Is there a way of using the normal Android gestures to increase the text size? I have noted that the app does not work in “wide” mode, which may have helped with the text size. Thanks.

Hi Robert, we don’t currently have any plans for the digital magazine pages to appear in landscape mode. However I have passed your feedback onto our designers for them to consider in any future updates.

Hi Brian, thanks for your message. Re the ability to increase the text size the answer is currently no. It’s something our designers are aware of and will look into the ability to implement in any future container app updates. I’ve passed your feedback onto them re the landscape mode so they can also consider this in any future design updates.

I’m interested in purchasing a bundle subscription for my father so that he can view old editions of the magazine online. He has a PC but no tablet / ipad, will this work ?
    Thanks

Hi Ali, thank you for your message. With the bundle package you will receive the monthly print magazine via the post, it also provides the monthly digital magazine available on iPad and Android tablet. It also gives you access to our Motor Sport archive, which has every issue from 1924 through to about 8 months behind the current magazine, this is web based and can be viewed on PC, laptop, tablet etc. as long as the device has a web browser connected to the internet. If your Dad is interested in our old issues I’m sure he will enjoy this as it provides over 100 issues, fully searchable, and has every page scanned in from cover to cover including the classifieds, plus all the text has been digitised for easier reading.

The digital magazine app is only available for iOS iPads and on Android tablets at the moment and will not be able to be used on your Mac Book. If you do not have a tablet, please contact our subscription team on +44 (0)20 7349 8472 or at subscriptions@motorsportmagazine.com and we can look to either arrange to have your current digital subscription turned into a print subscription or refund you. Hi Al,
Can you please check that your automatic renewal with Apple has gone through correctly by following the below steps and checking that the renewal has been applied to your iTunes account

If you find that the renewal is all in order, please try deleting the App and reinstalling it – however note this will remove any previously downloaded magazines and they will then need to be re-downloaded.

I bought a bundled subscription to read DSJ’s reports and commentary from the beginning . Things went well until last year when your site’s format was changed. Now, though the original pages from 1957,say, are technically available, only the top part of the page can be accessed, since scrolling up or down on the page is no longer possible.

How can I once again have the ability to scroll all through a page? Let’s not even mention the poor Haymarket word recognition software that makes the new reprints of old articles laughably unreadable.

I am accessing using a Microsoft Surface Tablet.

    Thank you.

Hi Lawrence, thank you for your message, our web editor has sent you an email asking for more details specifically to which articles/pages you are having problems with on the Archive so that we can look into this. We are aware that there are errors in the text recognition across a number of articles. To resolve this we currently have enlisted additional staff to work their way through each of the 1000 plus issues on the archive and correct any errors in each one. With this hopefully you find that the quality of article reproduction is improving all the time.

Hi, when do you plan to make this available on phones and/or PC?

It *seems* like it should be trivial to make it available on phones, since they are the same operating system as the tablets? I use Zinio on my phone, so larger-screen phones are completely fine for reading magazines when nothing else is available.

    Cheers.

Hi Roger, thank you for your message. We are currently in initial discussions with different providers that will allow us to offer our digital magazine across a number of other platforms, such as mobile and PC. As we are in the early stages of this project, I can’t comment to when this will be available, but it is certainly something we are looking into and want to offer our readers going forward. We will be sure to announce once we have this capability available.
