S.C.C. of Norfolk Pancake Rally (Feb. 20th)
The weather conditions prevailing in Norfolk made the Sporting C.C. of Norfolk’s 4th Pancake Rally one of the toughest events organised by the club. Of the 50 entries there were 36 starters, several of whom had to dig their way through snowdrifts to reach the start at Norwich. The rally was a restricted event with seven other clubs in East Anglia invited.

An average speed of 30 m.p.h. was scheduled with driving tests at route checks—the results of these only to count in the event of a tie on the road section.

The route of 140 miles went north-west from Norwich along the River Wensum, where competitors had to cross consecutive bridges and fords from opposite directions. Very heavy snow during the previous day made several of the lanes impassable, and where single tracks had been cleared by snow plough stoppages frequently occurred when meeting vehicles approaching from the opposite direction. Scheduled times had to be altered at the lunch check owing to the many delays, but there were only eight retirements out of the 36 starters at the final control near Diss. The rally was won on the road section.

Maidstone & Mid-Kent M.C., Brian Lewis Trophy Trial (Feb. 27th)
This trial was held in the Bexley Hills, near Maidstone. It attracted a large entry of 28 competitors, of whom eight were competing in a trial for the first time, and who are always welcome by the organisers. It was gratifying to note that R. Davis, winner of the Novices’ Award, finished ninth in the general classification.

The conditions in the morning were quite difficult, due to snow on some of the hills, and in the afternoon the sun shone, causing a thaw and making the hills very muddy. Seventeen hills were used, and only nine were climbed without loss of marks by a few competitors. The Horror, a well-known hill with trials competitors–this being used in the R.A.C. Trials Championships—defeated the whole entry, the highest up being M.R.B. Cannon, G. Newman and J.H. Appleton, in that order. The awards were presented in the evening by Mrs. Jane Waugh, the club’s Social Secretary.

Durham A.C. Medley Hope Rally (Feb. 27th)
Snow and the Hedley Hope Rally of the Durham A.C. appear to be near-relations, so often are they seen together. Last year the snow appeared during the event and only the early starters were able to clear the higher passes in North Yorkshire, but this year the snow, in much greater quantity, came before the event and had the organisers running around at the last minute re-arranging the route. On the route as originally planned the cars were scheduled to have crossed into Westmorland, but on the day in question even the main roads across the Pennines were still blocked, at one point more than 100 vehicles being abandoned in the deep drifts.
After twice altering the route in the week preceding the event, a further replanning was necessary on the Saturday, the distance being reduced to 130 miles on the by-lanes nearer the home town of the club. Nevertheless, none of the 42 entrants was able to keep within the scheduled times on the narrow lanes because of the rutted ice and snow.
Best Performance; P.G. Walton (Ford Anglia)
2nd; J. Bliss (Ford Zodiac)
3rd; W. Elliott (Ford Prefect)
Novices’ Awards; S.R. Taylor (Morris-Oxford), Dr. Shuttleworth (Alvis), P. Young (Lancia)

Caernarvonshire & Anglesey M.C. Farmyard Frolic (Mar. 5th)
Accent on the drivers’ navigational ability as much as that of the navigators themselves was the theme behind the Farmyard Frolic Night Navigation run on March 5th. At the start navigators were herded into a small boat and taken across the Menai Strait to a remote jetty, to which drivers had to navigate themselves—about eight miles. There followed the traditional route through Anglesey lanes, along cart-tracks and through farmyards, with speed, wiggle-woggle and muddy restart tests on the way. The 67-mile course ended with a further ”driver-only” section.
The thirty entries included several from students and staff of the University College of North Wales, which is taking an increasing interest in motor sport.
