Veteran to classic

The Windermere Steamboat Museum is playing host to three classic car rallies this year. The Bugatti Owners Club is holding the first on Saturday, April 27 followed by the MG Car Club on Sunday, August 24. The final event is “Morgans at Windermere” Rally on Saturday, September 1.

To raise money for Cancer Research and Children in Need, a 1928 Austin 7 Chummy is to attempt a round the coast of Britain drive, starting from Kings Lynn on May 10. It is hoped that the 3500 mile run will be accomplished in about ten days. Those who wish to sponsor the drivers, Neil McLeland and Peter Towler, can do so by sending cheques to the All Saints House, Tilney, All Saints, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, sponsoring by the mile, the day or as a finisher. The Shuttleworth Trust’s “Great British Picnic”, first held in 1985, will take place again on June 2nd, at Old Warden Aerodrome. Anyone arriving in a motor vehicle made before 1956 is welcome and the afternoon will be devoted to a flying display featuring De Havilland aeroplanes. The East Midlands Section of the Rover Sports Register are holding their 11th Pride of Ownership Rally for pre-1950 Rover vehicles at Belvoir Castle, near Grantham on Sunday, August 18. The Register is hoping to make a special feature of the Rover “streamline” model from the mid-Thirties.

News of Jowett models of all ages appears in the Jowetteer, magazine of the Jowett CC, and it is fascinating how many items relate to the flat-twin cars and Bradfords. This year’s National Rally will be at East Grinstead. The book on the History of the Jowett was launched at Bradford Industrial Museum on March 16 and the Club’s Membership Secretary is Frank Cooke, 152, Leicester Road, Loughborough, LE11 2AQ; the Club has pre-war, Bradford, Javelin and Jupiter Registrars and a spares scheme for these models.

Arising out of last month’s Editorial, which announced that Kingston-upon-Thames is introducing a 20 mph speed limit for some of its streets, Stanley Sedgwick has sent us a map showing that this town imposed a 10 mph limit in 1905 on Clarences Street, Eden Street and part of the London Road, the only place where the universal 20 mph limit was not observed.
