Do You Recall Them?

According to the Radio Times, Jack Warner, who, having “left the Force” as Dixon of Dock Green, is about to take the part of the boss of Turner’s Garage in “The Motor Way,” used to do a bit of motor racing in the Brooklands days. Becoming interested, we checked in “The History of Brooklands Motor Course,” to discover that there was a J. W. Warner driving at the 1926 B.A.R.C. Autumn Meeting. He used a grey 12/50 Alvis, apparently with the big-port short-stroke engine, and lapped at 86.6 m.p.h., which may or may not be news to the 12/50 Alvis Register. However, the Radio Times goes on to state that Warner raced “Not only at Brooklands, but on tracks in Italy, Spain, Germany and France,” where “he built up quite a reputation between the wars as one of Europe’s crack drivers.” The italics are ours. We recall Nuvolari, Caracciola, Seaman, Lang, Rosemeyer and others but not Warner. Can someone enlighten us ?

Incidentally, the Sunday Express, writing of male photographic models, refers to Roy Nightingale, ” the fabulous pink soap TV man,” as having been a racing driver. When, and where ? – W. B.
