Brooklands Society Reunion

The annnual pilgrimage of devotees of the pre-war racing scene to Brooklands always produces some colourful personalities and exotic historic machinery. Although there were no “Babs” or Napier Railton, this year was no exception and the list of racing personalities from the thirties (and earlier) attending seems endless. Of the cars Willoughby’s immaculate AC (above left) provided true flavour to the vintage years, while Dudley Gahagan’s ERA (above right), complete with Brooklands “can” and fish-tail, is evocative of the great years of the thirties as it mounts high on the banking. Motor cycles were, of course, a regular feature of Brooklands life and this example (left) ascending the famous test hill is typical of the machines which used to compete. Alain de Cadenet’s presence with his Tipo B Alfa Romeo (below left) indicates that these occasions are just as important to those who never knew Brooklands in it hey-day as it is for those who did. Amilcars were present in large numbers, both when the circuit was active and at the re-union, this example climbing the test hill being owned by Riobbie Hewitt. Her passenger is Rivers Fletcher.
