The Sheffield Simplex is such a rare car that I became confused when confronted with the information that such a car has returned to its birthplace, Sheffield. I wrongly assumed it to be the car Lord Riverdale had in 1978, fully restored on its return from Australia, and with which he re-enacted its 1911 Land’s End/John O’Groats run. In fact, the car now in the Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield is the car which Earl Fitzwilliam, the sponsor of the Sheffield-Simplex Company, had owned — which makes this car all the more welcome at the Sheffield Museum — which then went to Ireland, owned by John Ellis, before departing to America. This very rare 50hp Sheffield Simplex which did not require restoring now forms part of an exhibition of Sheffield-built vehicles at Kelham Island Museum, open until December 1995.
