Sands of time recorded

Lynn Hughe’s Pendine Races, published by Gomer Press, Llandysul, Ceredigion, Wales for 1,25.00 (ISBN 1 85902 830 6), is quite a feat, describing what happened on the famous sands from 1905 onwards, with reports, results, pen sketches of famous riders and drivers, and newspaper accounts.

The amazing array of pictures is extremely well reproduced. The record attempts are described, the fatality to Parry Thomas in considerable detail. Hughes is not afraid of describing the biased investigation into his accident in Tabs’ — but why isn’t Reid Raikon’s solution finally accepted?

Nonetheless, this is a remarkable book, the pictures so worthwhile, and now we look forward to other histories of sandracing, at Porthcawl, Southport etc.

Brooklands Books of Cobham now have volumes about Le Mans and the Land Speed Record. Both are truly impressive, and are composed of topical reports from various leading motor journals. Much can be learned from reports written at the time of events.
