THE FIVE-LITRE MERCEDES-BENZ

We have received from the DaimlerBenz Company some further details of the ” Speed and Economy Gear” on the a-litre Mercedes-Benz which was described in last month’s MOTOR SPORT, and which will be of interest to our readers. The over-gear is selected, -not, as we assumed, by means of a vacuum-servo motor, but simply through the agency of a spring, which is compressed by the movement of the gear-lever when the high ratio is preselected. On releasing the accelerator Pedal the spring causes the high gear to engage when the selecting dogs reach the same speeds, and the same action takes place when changing down to third or

direct ratio. In this case, of course, the engine is speeded up slightly before the change takes place.

The steering gear, incidentally, is manufactured entirely by the Daimler-Benz Company and is not an English component.
