Respect for Motorcyclists

Sir,

I do not understand why Johnny Cccotto or any other top motorcycle racer should want to “graduate” to four wheels (letter from John Deacon, November).

Having spectated at both car and motorcycle race meetings recently, I believe it is the motorcyclists who show the greater skill, courage and spectacle, and consequently I have more respect for Barry Sheene and Mick Grant, than for Niki Lauda and co.

Moreover, being both a car and motorcycle owner, I can say that I get far more satisfaction from my motorcycle, which offers far superior acceleration, response and manoeuvrability than almost any sports car, and is far less frustrating to drive on congested roads.

Real motoring enthusiasts—who surely do not consider weather protection and carrying capacity to be of the greatest importance— should try graduating to two wheels!

I must add that I still derive some pleasure from cars, and enjoy Motor Sport immensely every month.
