Philip Turner obituary: respected motor racing journalist

Philip Turner

We are greatly saddened to learn that Philip Arthur Turner has died, aged 76. News all the more poignant because he had returned home after a major operation and had been progressing well. Philip was a motoring enthusiast who for a time edited the ERA Club magazine, before becoming a well-known motoring journalist. He was Sports Editor of Motor News from 1936 up to the outbreak of war. After that he joined the staff of The Autocar. He left in 1948 to become Technical Editor of The Garage & Motor Agent and from 1953 to 1988 was on the staff of The Motor, attending the major motor races, going to America for them, and becoming a writer respected throughout the Motor Industry. A resident of Sutton Coldfield, Philip retired in 1988 but remained The Motor’s Midlands Consultant.

I well remember this quiet, friendly person, with whom I once went, in his 12/50 Alvis saloon, to a race meeting after he had stayed with us in Hampshire and who accompanied us when Motor Sport flew to the Spanish GP at Barcelona in a chartered aeroplane. To his wife and son, my sincerest condolences. The Interment Service was held at All Saints Church, Shillington, on November 24.
