In Defence of Goodwood

Sir,

Re John Aston’s letter in the December issue. As a competitor, I confess I had my doubts as the event drew near. Endless bumph arrived, much of it concerning items that seemed to have little to do with motor-racing. However the meeting was a real occasion – something to blow off Henley, Ascot, Wimbledon, etc. The fact that there were some magnificent cars were a bonus. It would have been worth going just to see the recreation of a bygone age, the fantastic flying displays and for Saturday night’s epic bash. Donington Park is indeed a great circuit with good access but somehow events there tend to lack atmosphere and style. I thought Goodwood was a tremendous success and I hope that it will always be run along similar lines.
