Tom Dickson in the Ecurie Ecosse Cooper-Climax Monaco Wins Big Sports-Car Race at 88.46 m.p.h.

Before a disappointingly small crowd the B.A.R.C. Goodwood Meeting at Whitsun was run off with traditional efficiency in unexpected cold weather following a heat-wave over most of the holiday.

The first race, the Cibie Cup 10-lap scratch eontest for four-seater closed cars, looked like a victory for Blytienstein’s no-longer-young but fast Borgward. The Gentian car led for eight laps but. was challenged strongly by the remarkable Austin A40s of Lawrence and Gaston. Gaston had passed his rival into second place and went on to take the Borgward. which was now banging back as if with weakening brakes: although the Cermatt car re-passed Lawrence’s A40 along Lavant Straight the Austin went in front again into Woodeote on the final lap. filyclenstein hitting the hurdles at the dreaded ch iranr. Gaston won by a clear second. at 72.91 m.p.h..

but Lawrence made fastest lap, at 74.10 m.p.h. Clarke drove a good race, mainly on his own, finishing fourth in his oddly-finished A40, but. behind, Merfield’s Ford New Anglia managed to stave off hedges’ A40 by 0.2 of a see. after some very dicey driving, often on two wheels, the Anglia rolling dangerously. whereas the Seuderia Light Blue’s Austin looked as steady as a rock.
