Overdriven new cars

Sir,

I was interested in Mr Trenungs letter regarding overdriven new cars. In the 1920’s Morris Motors came up with the simple idea of fitting a washer between the carburetter flange and inlet-manifold which restricted the amount of mixture the engine could take in. This washer was sealed and if removed before 500 miles had been covered the guarantee became void. I knew of owners who would knock up the 500 miles in a few days to get the washer removed as soon as possible.
