Indy special in late bid for Goodwood

McLaren Cars Sales Director David Clarke intends to run his 1949 Norm Olson Special Indy car at Goodwood’s Festival of Speed. The plan was hatched after Clarke solved the gearbox problems of the three-time Indianapolis 500 starter, replacing the two-speed ‘box with a modern Super T10 unit. The 4.3-litre, 330bhp Offenhauser-engined car is essentially a copy of a Maserati 8CTF chassis. Clarke, who races a Lister-Chevrolet, says the four-cylinder Offy “doesn’t vibrate at all, and pulls like a 12”.
