A Good Triumph Spitfire, Too!

Sir,

With reference to the large amount of had reports on Triumph sports cars that appeared in your January issue, I feel that something must be said in their defence!

Although having no experience of the TR6, having owned a 1300 Spitfire for the past two years. I can honestly say that I have not owned a more reliable vehicle and also one that can give an immense amount of pleasure during the too few summer months when “hood-down” driving is permitted. Along with this, reasonable insurance rates and very good fuel economy. Even the much maligned rear suspension has caused no problems since a set of wider wheels have been fitted. Engine mileage is now 52,000, at which time no loss of power is apparent— oil consumption at a minimum pressure of 55 lb. hot. One useful tip is that the emission control engine is fitted as standard with rather weak EB carburetter needles. These can be changed for AN or even H6 with non-restrictive air filters (pancake type). This will increase performance and flexibility with very little drop in m.p.g.

Altogether this car has provided myself and my wife with much enjoyment and, after suffering two modified Dagenham saloons, I would not hesitate in choosing another Triumph model for my next vehicle; hopefully a Dolomite Sprint! As a postscript, my younger brother, although employed by the Ford Motor Company, also prefers the Triumph range, in this case the GT6 for which he also has nothing but praise. I would also point out that we both carry out our own servicing/ maintenance so perhaps in some cases prevention nullifies the need for cure?
