Jameson Special - 2

Sir

I read with considerable interest your article on my father the late Joseph L Jameson in your December edition of MOTOR SPORT, and entitiled ‘Mystery Special’. I cannot add anything concerning the technical details of his supercharged 2-stroke racing engine, chiefly because he wasn’t given to discussing a project that showed such promise in the development stage, but which failed to fulfil its promise at the start line.

I do however well remember the Bugatti chassis as it was suspended in the roof space of the family house garage for many years, finally to be sold after the Second World War to Lemon Burton, who I believe were concessionaires for the marque. My father passed away in 1959. His eldest son was Paul Jameson, the same who built the three legendary ‘monster’ road cars powered by 27-litre Merlin aero-engines using both blown and unblown versions. Sadly Paul also died in 1989. Both were aged 57 years, and shared the same birthday. They were two unconventional geniuses in their way, and are greatly missed.

A Jameson,

Leatherhead, Surrey.
