M3 returns to the track

A project to turn the latest V8-powered M3 into a GT2 contender is known to have already started at BMW Motorsport in Munich, despite denials from the manufacturer. The car could enter service in the American Le Mans Series as early as 2009.

BMW North America motorsport manager Martin Birkmann denied the existence of the project. ”There is nothing concrete we can shout about right now,” he said. ”But we are keen to go racing again.”

The new car would be the first BMW sports car since the controversial M3 GTR which wrapped up the 2001 ALMS GT2 title. The project was subsequently canned when the eligibility rules were changed, but the car returned to the track to win the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2004-05.
