'Wonderful problem' for Goodwood Circuit Revival

One thousand applications for race entries from owners of cars with the requisite circuit history will ensure the success of September’s Goodwood Motor Circuit Revival, but the weight of numbers is providing a headache for selectors charged with the job of assembling 12 representative 30-car grids.

“It’s a wonderful problem to have,” said panellist and ardent Historic racer Robert Brooks. “Six months before the meeting, we could have filled all three Grand Prix car races and the 500cc field three times over, and the Formula Junior grid four times!”

At the press day in April, a demonstration ‘race’ was staged with Minis, the Coombs Jaguar Mk11 and Lotus Cortinas driven by Sir John Whitmore, Les Leston, John Fitzpatrick and Roy Salvadori while Jack Sears rumbled round in his Ford Galaxie.

Also expected on the 50th anniversary of the circuit’s opening are Americans Dan Gurney and Phil Hill, reunited with the 1964-65 Shelby Cobra coupes. Gurney raced one at Goodwood in ’64, winning the Tourist Trophy’s GT class. MP
