That Le Mans MG Midget

Sir,

I was most grateful for Mr. Bonner’s letter on the subject of R40 Castrol oil. I should mention that when the engine had been rebuilt the crankcase had been filled with R40 and a small amount added to the fuel to act as upper cylinder lubricant. After running in had been completed the oil was changed and replaced with R50. ‘rhere may I’ell have been some R40 left in the 15-gallon tank, causing the aroma. Being a very economical car, that amount of fuel takes time to use.

Mr. Alvarez’s letter was most interesting. My only explanation of the difference in the price I received on its sale and that paid by him was that I sold it to Mr. Taylor of Taylors Garage opposite The Bull Hotel at Gerrards Cross. He ran it locally for some time while carrying out certain modifications; he probably ran on trade plates thus leaving my name in the Registration Book and taking a modest profit. I believed he moved to Rickmansworth. The car is now going very much better than when the Editor drove it (“you should have seen the garden last week” etc.) mainly due to a new camshaft and modified tappets.
