US GRAND PRIX

JONES (above) miscalculated his start from fifth position on the grid, sliding wide on the grass and losing a number of positions. This shot, with third place man Reutemann in the foreground, shows him re-joining the track in eighth position. (Below) Brabharn designer Gcndon Murray talks with Piquet in the pits. (Right) The Ferraris may not have been Competitive in North America, but they are still very Impressive to look at.

PIRONI (above) was unable to may any impression on the leaders but drove firmly to give Ligier another third position.

DE CESARIS (below) showed great promise in practice, bringing the Alfa Romeo well up on the grid, but badly mistudged his braking early in the race, colliding with Daly’s Tyrrell, and had to retire.

RIGHT: The spark plug manufacturer’s cap seems an appropriate item for Alan Jones to hold aloft with the Watkins Glen Trophy.
