Veteran to classic -- VSCC Kentish Rally

Moving to Kent on September 15th, the VSCC ran a rally divided into four classes, for newcomers (nine of them, of whom the best performer proved to be G Crabtree in a 1929 4-1/2-1itre Bentley), those equipped with Edwardian cars, vintage light cars or vintage touring cars, the fortunate beings in vintage sports cars, and drivers and navigators in post-vintage-thoroughbreds. The only unfortunates not to finish the course were the Pilkingtons in their Ulster A7. The rest of the 52 competitors survived the 13 time-controls and a dozen route-checks to gain the following awards:

First Class: P Hart (1930 16/50 Humber) who lost only ten marks, against a lowest score of 448 by a Le Mans Aston Martin whose crew I will not name, K Burnett (12/50 Alvis), J Creed-Miles (Ulster A7), W Mahoney (1100 HRG), and A Lupton (1938 Lea-Francis).

Second Class: C Hanna (A7), P Blakeney-Edwards (Bentley), P Weston (Ulster A7), B Ducker (Riley 9), and G Tomlin (12/60 Alvis).

Third Class: B Sudjic (Hotchkiss), P Gallifant (Alvis SE), F Moore (Lancia Lambda), P Binns (1100 HRG) and J Gathercole (Riley Imp).

The navigators were no doubt indispensible and we apologize for not having space in which to list them. — WB.
