At least three cars will not be asked back to the Goodwood Revival in 2008 because they were run, or were believed to have been run, this year in technical specifications not in keeping with the spirit of the invitation-only event.

The performance of Ray Bellm’s Ford GT40 during the Whitsun Trophy race in particular caught the attention of the scrutineers after it clung to Frank Sytner’s theoretically faster Lola T70 before going on to win. An engine strip-down revealed roller rockers and strengthened valve gear to sustain higher revs. This was in contravention of its FIA Period F (pre-1966) Historic Papers, although because the Revival is not an official FIA event no action was taken.

In addition, two cars that ran at the front during the St Mary’s Trophy two-parter were later removed from parc fermé without permission. Requests to check engine capacity had been made by the chief scrutineer but were rebuffed by mechanics. See our Goodwood Revival report on p90.
