Grenzlandring Races (Aug. 31st)

Although on public roads Grenzlandring has all the characteristics of a specially built track, being 9 kilometres in length, egg-shaped and capable of being driven round virtually without closing the throttle. As a result track speeds and track techniques are the rule. The fully streamlined Veritas two-seaters proved their worth in the Formula II event. Brandon and Brown were running with their Cooper-Bristols but the pace was too fast for them and after leading for two laps Brown’s water-pump drive failed, while Brandon was not fast enough to keep up with the leaders and gradually dropped back to the end of the field. Toni Ulmen, with a cockpit “bubble” fitted on his B.M.W.-engined Veritas, lapped regularly at over 200 k.p.h. to win from Klenk’s all-enveloped o.h.c. Veritas single-seater with another B.M.W.-engined Veritas third. Von Stuck, who holds the lap record with his V8-A.F.M., had the crankshaft break in practice and fitted a B.M.W. engine, but was not fast enough.

In the Formula III event the tables were turned for John Cooper drove Bill Aston’s record-breaking Cooper, fitted with a Norton engine and the superb streamlining paid dividends for he ran away with the race. Brown broke his Cooper engine on the second lap and Brandon and Moss ran in close company throughout the race, Stirling sitting a few inches from Brandon’s tail until they approached the finish when he just failed to gain second place by a matter of half a wheel.
