Gilles Villeneuve

A photographic portrait

Quentin Spurring/LAT/Nigel Roebuck

An evocative collection of photos from the LAT archive of the great Gilles Villeneuve, including many from his early career in Formula Atlantic and then travelling through his understandably often-forgotten runs in the awful Can-Am Wolf to his F1 debut in a McLaren M23, and his Ferrari heyday and the dreadful day when he died at Zolder. An extensive introduction from Nigel Roebuck is followed by well-written, informative photo captions from Quentin Spurring. Many of the images are well known, but there are also plenty of less familiar shots and throughout, the aggressive, passionate Villeneuve driving style shines through, with lots of oversteer, plenty of spins and several lost or departing wheels. Stirring stuff. NP
