Plaintiffs, Trains & Automobiles

Fuel scams, level crossings and one of the UK's freshest racing initiatives Three round trips and another 970 miles covered in a 14-year-old Fiat… all worth it for some very fine breakfasts and even better racing. CADWELL PARK The journey was bracketed by the greatest of contrasts. At its dawn, in Catford, I was asked to pay in advance for unleaded – a compulsory measure introduced through sheer...

Matters of Moment

Terrible, Terrible . . . We live, unfortunately, in terrible times, with thousands-of-millions of pounds deemed necessary for protecting ourselves with nuclear weapons, blood being spilled on the streets of British cities (our sympathy goes out to the policemen who act so bravely during such riots), and unemployment approaching 3,000,000 in what still appears to be a moderately wealthy country....

Veteran Edwardian Vintage

A section devoted to old-car matters The Life and Times of Montie Grahame-White The days of the true motoring pioneers are now so far distant that it is important not to overlook them. All aspects of the game were so very different then from those applying even in what we, today, call the vintage years. While much has been recorded about pioneers such as Charles Jarrott (who wrote "Ten Years of...

The VSCC at Brooklands

Brooklands was the surprisingly sunny and warm venue for the February Driving Test meeting of the Vintage SCC, by courtesy of British Aerospace.  This fixture can be said to follow motor sporting tradition, in as much as long before the war the Junior Car Club, now the present-day BARC, held a similar meeting at the track, although in March.  That for 1932, for example, had more than 100 entries...

VSCC Prescott Hill-Climb

Rain came, to dampen the second-half of the annual VSCC Prescott speed hill-climb, on August 12th. The slippery conditions after the lunch break were such that only three drivers improved on their morning times – Vessey in his off-white Lancia two-seater by 0.3 sec., Baller in his smart 1934 Hotchkiss Type-615 tourer by 0.5 sec. – this car had caused some amusement by arriving with three small...

Missing Trophy

The VSCC would like to run the main race at its Donnington meeting next year for the Nuffield Trophy, for old-times' sake, although, in fact, the pre-war races of this name were confined to cars of up to 1½-litres. The difficulty is that it cannot locate the Nuffield Trophy that it considers should be awarded to the winner. The last driver to receive this was Prince Bira, but his manager Prince...

A section devoted to old car mattersTalbots in London At the instigation of Stephen Lally, the 80th Anniversary of the Talbot name, in particular the opening of the factory, Ladbroke Hall, in October 1904 for building the Earl of Shrewsbury and Talbot's cars, at Barlby Road in W. London, was duly celebrated, with a rally at that very factory (likely soon to be pulled down, alas). On May 26th,...

Kenneth Neve, OBE

Sadly, the entire vintage motoring world is mourning the death, after a long illness, of Kenneth Neve, OBE, at the age of 84. He was a highly successful and popular personality, both in business and in his pastime of rebuilding and running older motor-cars, which was a full-time relaxation. Educated at Tonbridge School and then apprenticed to Vickers-Armstrong, Neve spent his entire business life...
