– Bonhams –

First RM Auctions sold the Aston Martin DB2 works car (VMF 64) that Motor Sport featured in the November 2009 issue, and now Bonhams is selling its sister car, VMF 65.

The factory racer is coming up in Bonhams’ 11th annual Aston Martin and Lagonda Motor Cars sale on May 22, and is estimated to fetch between £380,000-440,000. That’s a similar estimate to VMF 64, but that car sailed past its mark and sold for £550,000, so don’t be surprised if ‘65’ does the same. Although it met with an accident on the way to Le Mans in 1950 which prevented the car from competing, the likes of
Stirling Moss, Peter Collins, Roy Salvadori, Tony Rolt, Lance Macklin and Eric Thompson all drove ‘65’ in period. As James Knight, group head and managing director of Bonhams, says: “It is eligible and a welcome entry for pretty much every prestigious historic motoring event, from the Mille Miglia to the Le Mans Classic.” Indeed it is.

Ninety-eight per cent of lots were sold at the same sale last year – a statistic the company will be keen to replicate on Saturday March 6. A rare 1989 Ford RS200 is one of 160 road cars coming up for sale with an estimate of £85-95,000. Also going under the hammer is a replica Ferrari P4 Spyder (£65-85,000) and a 1971 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI Limousine (£30-40,000).

At its Marine sale on March 24, Bonhams is selling the trophy presented to Sir Malcolm Campbell to commemorate his first World Water Speed Record on Lake Maggiore, Italy, in 1937. The waterline model of the single-step hydroplane ‘Bluebird K3’ is expected to fetch between £35,000-50,000.

– RM Auctions –

RM has a busy month ahead with two sales in the space of two weeks: one at Amelia Island on March 13 and the other at Fort Lauderdale on March 26-28. The first includes the Tojeiro-Jaguar that we mentioned last month, but now an interesting 1965 Shelby Cobra USRRC Roadster has been added to the lot list.

One of six such cars, CSX 2557 was entered into the final race of 1964 – the Bridgehampton Double 500. It failed to finish, but was retained by Shelby American until 1966 after which it was raced in SCCA A/Production in particular.

It carries an estimate of £960,000-1.2m. The 1963 Watson ‘Leader Card 500’ Indy Roadster is another addition to the sale. The car has won many Concours awards and featured in last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

There have also been some early lots announced for RM’s first Monaco sale on

May 1 in the shape of a 1952 Ferrari 225 Sport Vignale Berlinetta, which was a Mille Miglia competitor in period (£530-700,000), and a 1965 Lola T70 Mk1.

– H&H –

As always, H&H has a number of historic racing cars going under the hammer at its Race Retro sale on March 13. Most notable is a 1935 Lagonda LG45 Tourer which competed in the 1936 Monte Carlo Rally (£90-110-000) and the 1971 Escort RS 1600 that Stig Blomqvist drove on the 2007 Safari Rally. One of the works-supported Escorts is also on sale. The 1975 Escort RS 1800 (£90-110,000) was driven by John Taylor and Malcolm Wilson, among others, and still retains the original shell. Also included are a 1955 Cooper Mk9 Formula 3 (£15-17,000), which incredibly spent many years as part of a fairground ride, and a 1965 Marcos 1800 GT with FIA papers (£24-26,000).

– Coys –

Coys is looking forward to its Spring Classics sale on March 11 at the Royal Horticultural Halls, which features a 1961 Warwick GT350 and a pre-66-specification Alfa Romeo GTA (£55-65,000), both with FIA papers.

The Warwick competed throughout 1961, taking in the RAC Rally (when it retired with a holed sump), the Silverstone 750MC 6 Hour relay, the Brighton Speed Trials, the British Empire Trophy and the Goodwood Whitsun meeting. The car returned to Goodwood last year and competed in the Fordwater Trophy. It carries an estimate of £35-45,000.

– Historics at Brooklands –

A new independent auction house, Historics at Brooklands will host its inaugural sale on June 2. Private investors reached an agreement with the Brooklands Museum Trust Ltd and now have exclusive rights to hold sales at the famous circuit. “We’ve long wanted a regular top-quality classic car auction in keeping with the legacy of this site,” said trust director Allan Winn.
