JOHN PLAYER BRITISH GRAND PRIX

James Hunt won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 16th at the wheel of his McLaren M26 (top) although he was led for a good distance by John Watson’s Brabham BT45B which is seen (top right) leading Lauda and Hunt into Becketts. Jody Scheckter’s Wolf (No. 20) disputed fourth place with Andretti’s Lotus (bottom) but both retired with engine failure. Opposite we see Lauda’s Ferrari leading the second place scrap into Stowe Corner from Scheckter’s Wolf, Hunt’s McLaren, the two works Lotus 78s and the McLarens of Villeneuve (M23) and Mass (M26). The Renault RS01 (left) made its Formula One debut at Silverstone in the hands of Jean-Pierre Jabouille and qualified for the race towards the back of the starting grid. Although the car only lasted sixteen laps, its turbo-charged 1.5 litre engine proved as fast as some of the Grand Prix tail-enders and the whole Renault team were very encouraged and optimistic about its debut.
