“Modern Motorcycle Maintenance” by Bernal Osborn of “Motor Cycling,” published by Temple Press, Ltd., Bowling Green Lane, London, E.C.1. Price 5s.

The mysteries of the internal combustion engine are many and varied, and to the enthusiastic motor-cyclist a guide is needed to the smooth running and repairing of his machine. Bernal Osborn has adequately supplied such a guide with neat line drawings of most of the operations which are described in the text, and the author has included in his work some 60 pages of technical data on a large selection of modern machines.

This book makes easy reading, not only to the mechanically-minded, but also to the novice.—M. J. T.

“The Englishman’s Home” by Val Doone (George G. Harrap and Co., Ltd., 1948. Reprinted 1949, 25s.)

A beautifully produced book containing 60 photographs specially taken and brought together by Val Doone to present the essence of England. Each photograph has its own interesting commentary. This is a book which will give endless pleasure to all who love England. Here as we turn the pages we see her fields and hedges—her stately homes, her farms and cottages, her churches and windmills, her docks and glimpses of her smoky chimneys. Also we see portrayed the farmer’s wife, the shoeing smith, cobbler and village policeman.

It is good to know that all the photographs have been taken with English lenses and cameras and the whole production English throughout.—J. T.
