SURB1TON MOTOR CLUB.

The Surbiton M.C. held its seventh annual Team Trial for the Maudes’ Challenge Shield on Saturday, June 5th.

There were sixty competitors, comprising twelve teams of five riders representing various clubs affiliated to the A.C.U. Only amateur riders were eligible, and they had to cover a 76-mile course consisting of two circuits of 38 miles. The whole course had to be completed non-stop at an average speed of 20 m.p.h., time checks being taken at the end of each circuit only. Although some useful hills were encountered, the going was not very difficult and very few stops were recorded by the observers on the various bills. In all seven teams completed the course intact, whilst only four teams completed the course non-stop. The start was made from the Talbot Hotel, Ripley, in beautiful weather, at 2.30 p.m., and the course ran

through Effingham, Bookham, Ranmore Common, Dorking, White Downs Hill, Shere, Farley Heath, Brook, Albury and Newlands Corner.

During the run, H. “W.” Bostock (on a Beardmore Precision) had trouble with his magneto timing, which resulted in his machine catching fire, but he managed to put things right and eventually finished in time to check in. L. C. Watts, riding a Scott Combination, apparently heated up on White Downs Hill, and eventually came to a stop. On the narrow road between Farley Heath and Brook a timber lorry was responsible for a baulk of about 15 minutes, and consequently a time allowance had to be made to four teams.

The Bucks County M.C. represented by E. S. Burnett (Capt.), E. Bird, E. F. Fieldwick, F. G. Hannds, and C. F. King, with an aggregate time error of only 38 secs., secured the Maudes’ Trophy, which was handed to their captain by Professor A. M. Low, and gold medals. The Uxbridge M.C. obtained second place, with an aggregate loss of 75 secs., whilst the Woolwich, Plumstead and District M.C. were third, losing 77 secs. Silver and bronze medals were awarded to the second and third teams respectively.

The aimual London-Barnstaple Trial will start from Kingston at io p.m. on Friday, July 30th. The event is open to motor-cycles and cars, and is more in the nature of a social run.
