V.C.C FESTIVAL RUN (June 3rd)

This Festival Run from Hyde Park to Royal Windsor attracted 55 veterans. 47 Edwardians and 11 vintage cars, of which nine non-started, 10 fell by the wayside, and P. C. Bath’s 1903 White Steamer was too late at Windsor to qualify for a plaque. Unfortunately the event did not attract anythIng like the enthusiasm accorded the S.M.M.T. Cavalcades of a few years ago and some members thought the entry fee of £1 for being admitted to the Home Park – where cows later tried to mingle with the veterans – rather steep. Most of the old favourites were present, together with G. E. Milligen’s interesting 1910 17-h.p. Maudsley tourer with o.h.c. engine, Geoffrey Frank’s vast 1905 six-cylinder Glass Canopy tourer Panhard-Levassor, a very neat 1914 Perry light car and C. G. Duce’s beautifully restored 1925 “12/50” Alvis two-seater. Period costume is frowned on by the V.C.C., but we noticed a genuine Edwardian parasol carried by a lady in Lewis-Evans’ 1906 Darracq. The Mayor rode into Windsor on N. V. Reeves’ 1899 Benz and invited Committee members to his parlour, where the V.C.C. is the second organisation to be shown over the beautifully restored Council Chambers.

EIFELRENNEN FORMULA II & III (June 3rd)

British cars and drivers competed in both of the International events held at this year’s Eifelrennen on the Nurburg Ring. lit the Formula II race G. M. Watson and A. Gage drove new 2-litre unsupercharged Altas, while Oscar Moore drove one of last year’s H.W.Ms. The race was dominated by German Formula II cars, Paul Pietsch having a runaway win in his single o.h.c. Veritas single-seater, followed by the latest A.F.M., using a 328 B.M.W. engine. Interest was aroused by a team of D.A.M.W. cars from the Russian zone of Berlin, one of which finished seventh after a long stop on the first lap. Of the British entries Gage finished eighth, and Moore ninth, the latter having held sixth place until a plug caused a brief stop. Watson spun off the road on the first lap, losing a lot of time but then motoring quite well to bring up the rear.

In the Formula III event. British cars and drivers gave a demonstration. Ken Wharton (Cooper-Norton) led until near the end, when Ian Burgess just got by driving in the works team in place of John Cooper, the other two members finishing third and fourth. Paul Emery (Emeryson-Norton) went well in practice but retired with piston trouble in the race, while Frost’s Emeryson also retired.

THE BOL D’OR 24-HOUR RACE (June 3rd-4th)

Our condolences to the Aston-Martin O.C., which went to great pains to run two teams, one of ”Ulster ” Aston-Martins, driven by Robertson, Stewart and Platt, the other a mixed team of two “Le Mans” and one “Ulster” Aston-Martins, driven by Dace, Parker and Noar. Dace’s “Le Mans” had the misfortune to be involved with a Simca on a bend, two people being killed in the resultant crash, although Dace escaped with bruises. How well the other Aston-Martins fared is seen from the results :—

THE R.A.C. RALLY (June 4th-9th)

This International event is referred to editorially and on page 331. Ian Appleyard proved himself the British Rally driver par excellence and the XK 120 Jaguar the fittest of road cars by winning outright this tough event. It was tragic that Derek Parker was killed when J. A. Young’s Austin A40 Sports, in whidt he was co-driver, overturned on a corner in Cornwall-his brilliant preparation and handling of his vintage. Dubonnet i.f.s. Frazer-Nash “Patience” has been a high-light of club race meetings for some years and such an enthusiastic, skilled driver will be sadly missed.
