NOTES ON THE CARS AT ZANDVOORT

As most of the entry had come direct from Monte Carlo the week before there was little change to be seen, though Vanwalls had reverted to their long tapering noses and Moss drove VW10, Brooks VW7 and Lewis-Evans VW5. The three Ferraris were the same as at Monaco, all with the F.I. chassis frame having large-diameter bottom frame members, Hawthorn’s and Collins’ cars having the old tubular top wishbones at the front and Musso’s the latest forged pattern. Schell and Behra had the same cars as at Monaco, both being 1958 modesl. The peculiar feeling of the brakes on Behra’s car on that occasion being due to a cracked brake pipe at the belled-out end where it joined a T-piece junction, a piece of equipment supplied by a “specialised manufacturer,” not a part made at Bourne. The locking brake on Schell’s car was traced to a caliper expanding under very heavy loading and allowing the automatic ratchet pad adjustment to click up a notch before any wear had taken place. It was Salvadori’s turn to have the 2.2-litre Cooper, while Brabham had the 1.9-litre car. The Monaco gearbox trouble was traced to a selector fork corning loose on the operating rod so that it merely slid in and out without moving the selector. Lotus fitted their new 2.2-litre engine into Allison’s car for this race.—D.S.J.
