DETROIT GRAND PRIX

THE second Detroit Grand Prix took place on the American Motor City’s closed street circuit on June 5th, resulting in a somewhat lucky victory for Michele Alboreto’s Cosworth DFY-engined Tyrrell 011. On the left, Nelson Piquet’s Brabham BT52 is seen accelerating away from the start just edging ahead of Rene Arnoux’s pole position Ferrari 126C2B (No. 281 and Elio de Angelis’s Lotus 93T-Renault 556 with the steel and tinted glass of Detroit’s Renaissance Centre dominating the background. In the lower picture, opposite, de Angelis’s Lotus stands abandoned at the track side as winner Alboreto rushes past the pits chased by Rosberg’s Williams FWO8C which eventually finished runner-up. Above, Rosberg’s car can be seen with both front wheels just clear of the ground on one particularly bumpy section of the circuit. On the right, the Detroit track’s character is well illustrated by this shot of de Cesaris leading Alboreto, Warwick, Rosberg, Surer and Cheever down one of the long boulevard sections while (below) Piquet and Arnoux are seen locked in combat for the lead early in the race.
