New RAC TT for Silverstorne

The newly created Royal Automobile Club Historic Tourist Trophy will be one of the new features at the Silverstone Classic (July 23-25), when the pre-63 GT race carries the tag of Britain’s oldest motor race.

A celebration of 60 years of Grand Prix racing at Silverstone, a charity celebrity race and live music from Dr Feelgood and the Yardbirds are other attractions at what the event promoters are labelling as Europe’s most entertaining car-themed event. Over 800 cars and 1000 drivers will be on track across 23 races.

“We are building on the success of the 2009 event to make the Silverstone Classic bigger and better,” said Daniel Ward of Classic Historic Racing Ltd, the event promoters. “We are proud to be promoting the world’s biggest classic racing festival, which is a platform for a great day of family entertainment.”

The first running of the RAC TT for Historic Cars has already attracted entries for some of the rarest and most exciting GT cars ever built, including Ferrari GTO and SWB, Aston Martin DB4GT and Zagato. “Never before has such an authentic grid of Tourist Trophy cars been put together,” said Ben Cussons of the RAC.

An entry in the HGPCA Pre-61 race for the Alfa Romeo 158 of Carlos Vogele will provide a link to the first race for the World Drivers’ Championship, run at Silverstone in May 1950. The ‘Alfetta’ is believed to be the car driven by Juan Manuel Fangio in that race. The HGPCA and Grand Prix Masters races will cover more than three decades of F1 history.
