Cheering fans swarm onto the circuit to applaud Nigel Mansell’s victory in the GP of Europe at Brands Hatch, the Englishman brandishing the chequered flag as he makes his lap of honour in the course car accompanied by teammate Keke Rosberg who finished third. Alain Prost made a poor start and was well down the field before climbing back to fourth place and his World Championship.

Surer’s Brabham ahead of Laffite’s Ligier: the Swiss was holding second place when turbo failure intervened.

Rosberg spins and is collected by Piquet.

First lap scramble at Druids, with winner Mansell’s Williams FW10B shaving the grass as Senna and Rosberg head off down the hill.

Winners both: race victor Mansell and World Champion Prost share the champagne.
