1977 Dutch Grand Prix in pictures

At the start of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on August 28th, James Hunt made a superb start from the second row of the grid to lead into the first corner from pole position winner Mario Andretti (Lotus 78). Top Left, Hunt’s McLaren M26 eases inside his American rival as they brake for Tarzan, with Laffite’s ligier third ahead of the Ferraris of Lauda and Regazzoni. Andretti counter-attacked once he got the better of Laffite and challenged the World Champion driver by trying to run outside of the 180-degree Tarzan corner (top centre). As can be seen in the two pictures (bottom centre), the two cars emerged from the corner on converging lines and made inevitable contact (bottom) as they reached the exit. Hunt’s car was eliminated in the incident. Andretti resumed and later tried the same tactics on Lauda (No. 11), top right, although the two cars didn’t collide. Centre right, Reutemann’s Ferrari leads Nilsson’s Lotus as the Swede tries to dispute third place. Bottom, the much-improved Formula One Renault leads Emerson Fittipaldi’s Copersucar sponsored car. The eventual winner of the Dutch Grand Prix turned out to be Lauda (below left) but he had to work very conscientiously to hold off Laffite (No. 26), who eventually finished slightly less than two seconds behind the Ferrari after 75 laps of racing.
