The tail shot of Poncin’s 1929 Lancia Lambda, left, on the descent from the Col Saint Bernard, illustrates some of the arduous terrain faced by competitors on this Paris-Montreux-Turin rally route. Outright winner was Manuel Pestana’s magnificent torpedo-bodied 1925 Hispano Suiza Type 49, above, all the way from Spain. British honours were upheld by Stirling Moss/lan McGregor in the latter’s Aston Martin Le Mans, shown at the start in the Place de la Concorde, below right, which won the Concours and made light of some spirited driving. The National Motor Museum’s replica Le Mans 4-1-litre supercharged Bentley receives youthful French attention while Lord Montagu and the Deputy Editor take liquid sustenance elsewhere, below left.
