Alain Prost (above) seals his fourth world title at Estoril and then quits F1, allowing Ayrton Senna to move to Williams. McLaren fails to lure Michael Schumacher from Benetton, but signs a deal to use Peugeot V10s. Nigel Mansell wins IndyCar crown.

1983

Nelson Piquet dominates the European GP at Brands. British interest is strong, with Mansell a tigering third for Lotus and Derek Warwick’s Toleman fifth. A week on, the latter returns to the track to win the 1000Km in a JFR-run 956 (above).

1973

After Peter Revson’s controversial Canadian GP win, F1’s North American leg turns sour when Francois Cevert (above) is killed at Watkins Glen. A week later, world champion Jackie Stewart retires, and Emerson Ettipaldi quits Lotus to join McLaren.

1953

The BRM V16s are soundly beaten by Mike Hawthorn’s Thinwall Special at Goodwood, with Ken Wharton’s spin at Woodcote causing Tony Rolt (above) to go off in avoidance. A week later Stirling Moss breaks his kneecap at Castle Combe.

1928

Kaye Don’s Sunbeam takes two wins in the BARC’s season finale at Brooklands, the first after a lengthy tussle with Staniland’s Bugatti (above). Launched a week earlier is Britain’s first motor racing film, Smashing Through, which featured the Track.
