Philippe Bugalski

The Frenchman, who has died after a fall at the age of 49, will be remembered as the first man to win a world championship rally for Citroen.

He was already vastly experienced when he joined the French marque in 1998 and the following year won both the Catalunya and Corsican rallies in a Xsara. He claimed a hat trick of French titles between 1998 and 2000, while continuing to make regular appearances in the WRC.

A popular figure in the rally world, Bugalski retired from driving in 2003.
