THE TWO HUNDRED MILES MOTOR

CYCLE RACES.

In addition to substantial cash prizes, several handsome gold cups were offered as awards to the winners of the long distance races held at Brooklands on August 15th. Most of the prizes were contributed by the News of the World, Lord Riddell being present to distribute them to the winners.

The A and B classes, for 250 c.c. and 350 c.c. machines respectively, were started at 10 a.m., the total field consisting in 30 entries, the larger machines soon taking the lead. As is frequently the case with these massed starts, including more than one category, the race became rather difficult to follow; but, nevertheless, it was perfectly obvious that J. S. Worters (Cotton) and W. L. Handley (Rex Acme) were out to set up a really fast pace. Le Vack was in trouble, and this left Worters an easy task of completing the necessary 73 laps and finishing nearly half a minute in front of C. R. Briggs (O.K.). W. Colgan (Cotton) also put up a very good show and came in third, some three minutes behind Briggs. In the 350 c.c. race, W. L. Handley (Rex Acme) added still another laurel to his already large collection by

winning at 78.37 m.p.h. from Hopkins (Chater-Lea) and Kaye Don (Zenith). Kaye Don’s mount was to have been ridden by Stanley Woods, the Irish crack, but a last minute swop was made as Don had injured his ankle and felt unable to drive his own mount in the larger class. Marchant was unfortunate in receiving a blow on the chin owing to a bump on the track and was forced to retire, when nearly at the end of the race. The race exacted a heavy toll of the competitors, but Handley’s performance was one of outstanding merit.

In the 500 c.c. class George Dance appeared with a new Sunbeam, and Le Vack was mounted on a 490 c.c. H.R.D., who were included with the 24 starters. Eight big twins of Class E also faced the starter, making a very imposing array. After a very hot race with many incidents, L. P. Driscoll (Norton) came in first; C. W. Hough (A.J.S.), second, and E. W. Guyler (490 Dot-Jap), third. Run concurrently with the 500 c.c. class, the results of the 1,000 c.c. class are as follows :-1, Longman (989 Harley-Davidson); 2, J. S. Wright (980 Zenith).
