R.A.C. Hill-Climb Championship

After eight qualifying rounds of the R.A.C. National Hill-Climb Championship, Jersey driver Arthur Owen (2½-litre Cooper-Climax) leads the overall aggregate with 63 points from the Scot, Ray Fielding (2½-litre B.R.M.), who is second with 54 points. In third position is the Cooper-J.A.P. driver Ian McLaughlin with 41, whilst Josh Randles (2-litre Cooper-Monaco) just leads Tony Marsh by two points for fourth place, Marsh having .crashed his B.R.M.-engined “special” at Rest-and-Be-Thankful. Undoubtedly the surprise of the hill-climb season has been the appearance of Renato Martini’s 650-c.c. Triumph-engined midget, based on go-kart design but incorporating proper suspension, which has broken both the Bouley Bay and Great Auclum records, garnering Martini 2.2 points in two meetings. Last year’s Champion, David Good, is in the process of changing to a 1½-litre Climax-powered Formula Junior Cooper which will be entered for the remaining Championship events, whilst Tony Marsh is again pinning his hopes on his 2½-litre B.R.M., his “special” still being bent. A report of Great Auclum and Wiscombe Park Hill-Climbs appears on page 680.

Six-in-one

Guys Handtools Ltd. have recently added a six-in-one ratchet screwdriver to their range of hand-tools. Quickly interchangeable, the set of blades comprises three plain screwdrivers, the largest being 3/5 in., two Phillips-type blades and an awl. At 18s. 0d. the value is good when compared with the 35. 9d. charged by most shops for a single small Phillips screwdriver. The only complaint with the example which we have tested is the constant rattling of the blades being shaken around in the hollow handle, giving the impression that the car is falling to pieces!
