Riley Matters

Many people derive pleasure from Nuffield Rileys of the 1946 to 1955 period, with their stylish bodywork, leather-covered roofs (a “new” feature to modern catalogue compilers!) and, above all, the excellent four-cylinder hemispherical-head engine with the classic Riley lightweight push-rod valve gear and a nice gearbox. A club, called the Riley RM Club, has been formed to cater for these cars, and help over spares. The Secretary is J. Ratkinson, 48 Rosefield Road, Staines, Middlesex.

Older and even more classic Rileys are looked after by the enthusiastic Riley Register, whose Secretary is J. Stoton, 23 Millais, Horsham, Sussex. Such cars are still generally available at “sensible” prices, for although a 1936 Kestrel Nine saloon fetched £220 at a local auction last month, and another was offered at £200, both were in unusually good condition; more realistically, a 1935 Adelphi saloon, in sound running trim with M.o.T certificate and reasonable tyres, was sold recently in Berkshire for £50.
