Historic GP Masters F1

Frank Lyons scored a memorable victory when a historic GP Masters F1 race supported the French Grand Prix at Magny Cours in celebration of 100 years of grand prix racing.

A modest grid of 18 cars included Brian Wilson’s Brabham BT24-Repco, shipped from Australia, but it was James Hanson who dominated qualifying in Nick Rini’s BRM P160.

However, electrical problems saw Hanson retire early, while Yves Saguato (Shadow DN3) got stuck in the gravel at the first corner. Lyons now led, but had to survive a challenge from the Williams FW06 of Andrew Wareing before taking victory. Wareing went out with damaged suspension after contact, so Jeff Lewis ran second in his Tyrrell 007.
