Guy Smith

Overwhelming sadness ‘will be felt that Guy Smith has died, aged 63. His very notable achievements with his Alvis-engined Frazer Nash in VSCC, MAC and other events have been a feature of such meetings for a long time. With that car of many changes Guy achieved his ambition of beating Wharton’s Shelsley Walsh time with ERA R4D which he did in 1988 and there last year he made best Frazer Nash time since Fane’s back in 1937. The list of his many FTDs and race wins is highly impressive. The meetings where he ran will not seem quite the same with out this music-loving ex-Scout leader.

Joining the VSCC in 1964 with a Fiat Balilla, Guy bought the Spence Alvis/Nash in 1967, the Norris brothers having so engined it. Guy made a new body for this FN that had begun life as a Gough-engined sports ‘Nash which Jucker first modified. This led to much work for the FN Section of the VSCC and becoming its Competition Secretary. He also did much good organisational work for the Midland AC. On the road he used a 328 BMW, and a 12/50 Alvis was recently acquired with a view to more Continental touring, alas too late. We offer our condolences to Nina, whom Guy married in 1968. W B
