It was September 2012 when Grand-Am founder Jim France and American Le Mans Series owner Don Panoz announced that their two championships would merge to form a single unified sports car series in North America. Both ran final independent campaigns during 2013 before launching the United Sportscar Championship at the start of 2014.
With a five-year title sponsorship contract with Rolex's Tudor watch brand, the series incorporated the great races from each former series – Daytona 24 Hours, Sebring 12 Hours and Petit Le Mans. The lead prototype class was also an amalgamation with Grand-Am's Daytona Prototypes and ALMS's P2 cars both eligible. Separate classes for the one-make Prototype Challenge, Le Mans GT and Daytona GT were also included for the inaugural season.
