This year it was Nico Rosberg who emerged from the tense Abu Dhabi season finale as champion. In doing so, Keke and Nico Rosberg emulated Graham and Damon Hill as father\/son world champions. Five days after satisfying his lifelong ambition, Nico Rosberg stunned the sport by announcing his immediate retirement from racing.<\/p>\n<p>Hamilton won more races (10), led more laps (566)\u00a0and qualified on pole position on more occasions (12) than the eventual champion.\u00a0However, poor starts and crucial mechanical failures \u2013 most notably a\u00a0blown\u00a0engine in Malaysia \u2013 handed Rosberg the initiative and\u00a0the\u00a0German\u00a0clinched the title by finishing second in Abu Dhabi. That was\u00a0despite\u00a0Hamilton backing him\u00a0into the pursuing Red Bulls and Ferraris in\u00a0the\u00a0vain hope of Rosberg losing the podium finish he required.<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes were the clear class of the field\u00a0one again\u00a0\u2013 winning 19 of the record 21 championship rounds. The simmering tension between\u00a0its drivers\u00a0spilt over when they crashed together on the opening lap of the Spanish GP\u00a0and again on the last lap in Austria.<\/p>\n<p>Red Bull Racing were the only other team to win\u00a0during\u00a02016 with Daniel\u00a0Ricciardo\u00a0and Max Verstappen third and fifth in the final standings. Verstappen began the year with Scuderia Toro Rosso but he was promoted to the senior Red Bull squad after four races. He promptly benefitted from the Mercedes crash and a superior tyre strategy to win the Spanish GP\u00a0and\u00a0become F1\u2019s youngest winner to date\u00a0at 18 years and 227 days.\u00a0Ricciardo\u00a0was robbed of a deserved victory\u00a0in Monaco when\u00a0called into the\u00a0pits\u00a0before his mechanics were ready. He\u00a0finally\u00a0scored a popular fourth GP success\u00a0in Malaysia following\u00a0Hamilton\u2019s\u00a0retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Much was expected of Ferrari but Sebastian Vettel and Kimi\u00a0R\u00e4ikk\u00f6nen\u00a0suffered frustrating, winless campaigns.\u00a0Having lost the Australian GP due to a poor strategy call (a recurring theme), Vettel\u00a0salvaged fourth in the\u00a0championship thanks to seven podium finishes. That said,\u00a0he cut an increasingly angry figure\u00a0due to\u00a0Ferrari\u2019s lack of outright pace.<\/p>\n<p>Third for the last two seasons, Williams were edged out of fourth position\u00a0in the constructors\u2019 standings\u00a0by Force India for whom Sergio P\u00e9rez scored a couple of podium finishes.\u00a0Nico\u00a0H\u00fclkenberg\u00a0qualified on the front row in Austria but was generally outshone by the Mexican.\u00a0Valtteri\u00a0Bottas\u00a0was third in Canada\u00a0thanks to a one-stop strategy\u00a0and Williams team-mate Felipe Massa made an emotional retirement from F1 at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<p>McLaren-Honda made some progress after its disastrous 2015 campaign. Fernando Alonso was 10th overall having scored points on nine occasions while Jenson Button left the sport after 17 seasons at the top. Alonso had crashed out of the Australian GP in spectacular fashion and he was forced to miss the subsequent Bahrain GP as a consequence. McLaren reserve Stoffel\u00a0Vandoorne\u00a0scored a point\u00a0on his F1 debut by finishing 10th.<\/p>\n<p>Carlos\u00a0Sainz\u00a0impressed for Scuderia Toro Rosso\u00a0when compared to team-mates Verstappen and the demoted Daniil Kvyat. American industrialist and NASCAR team owner Gene Haas entered F1 with\u00a0what was effectively a Ferrari \u201cB\u201d team. Romain Grosjean scored points in three of the first four GPs but\u00a0the team\u2019s\u00a0form\u00a0tailed off during the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Renault\u00a0returned as a works team following its late deal to acquire the Lotus team from Genii. Kevin Magnusson and debutant Jolyon Palmer\u00a0struggled all year\u00a0although both at least scored points.\u00a0At the back of the field, the\u00a0cash-strapped\u00a0Sauber\u00a0team\u00a0snatched the crucial 10th place in the championship when Felipe Nasr finished ninth in the\u00a0Brazilian rain.\u00a0Pascal\u00a0Wehrlein\u00a0was 10th in Austria for Manor-Mercedes although that did not prove
